Tornado High Current Tops AudioQuest's Amplifier-Rated Cables
A power cable carries the last few feet of AC from the wall into a component. It can't add power a component doesn't draw, but a poorly shielded one lets noise ride in on that current.
AudioQuest's Tornado High (Variable) Current cable is a step up from Thunder in AudioQuest's flagship Storm Series, built for power amplifiers, conditioners, regenerators and any component with a built-in amplifier. It is the top High Current cable we carry.
Perfect-Surface Copper and Perfect-Surface Copper+ Conductors
Tornado High Current carries the same carefully finessed blend of solid, high-purity Perfect-Surface Copper (PSC) and extreme-purity Perfect-Surface Copper+ (PSC+) as Thunder, chosen to prevent strand interaction, which AudioQuest calls a major source of ear-fatiguing transient intermodulation distortion.
20-Amp ZERO-Tech, RF/ND-Tech and 72-Volt DBS
AudioQuest rates Tornado's ZERO-Tech design at 20 amps RMS at 125VAC, giving it headroom for current transient peaks many times its continuous rating, suited to power conditioners, regenerators, isolation transformers, amplifiers, powered subwoofers and receivers. RF/ND-Tech's patented common-mode phase-cancelling array and a 72-volt Dielectric-Bias System carry over from Thunder to keep induced RF noise off the current path.
The Connectors, Explained
Tornado High Current is available with a C13, C15 or the higher-current C19 inlet plug to match your amplifier or conditioner's power inlet, and a standard NEMA 5-15 three-prong plug for the US wall outlet at the wall end.
What Reviewers Are Saying
Stereophile named Tornado High Current a Recommended Component for 2025. Reviewer Herb Reichert wrote about swapping it onto a Pass Labs amplifier in his own listening notes.
Who Is This Power Cable Best For?
- You already own a Thunder High Current and want AudioQuest's top amplifier-rated cable — Tornado is positioned one step above Thunder in the Storm Series
- You are feeding a power amplifier, AV receiver or power conditioner — AudioQuest built the High (Variable) Current line specifically for that variable, high-current draw
- Your amplifier or conditioner takes a C19 or C15 inlet rather than C13 — Tornado High Current is offered in all three terminations
- Your rack sits in a noisy RF environment — the 72-volt Dielectric-Bias System and RF/ND-Tech's phase-cancelling array work together to keep that noise off the current path
- Your budget stops below Tornado's price — AudioQuest Thunder High Current carries the same conductor blend and 20-amp ZERO-Tech rating at a lower price
How Does It Connect to Your System?
Plug the C13, C15 or C19 end, whichever matches your amplifier or conditioner, into its IEC inlet, and the male end into a wall outlet or power conditioner outlet.
Then power up the system as usual. Other and longer lengths available. Call for prices.
Pairs Well With
A power cable is one link in the chain from the wall to your gear. It usually joins these categories.
- Power Conditioners — filter the whole circuit; the cable feeds the last few feet after it
- Integrated Amplifiers — the high-current load most power cables are built to feed
- Stereo Amplifiers — another high-current destination for the heavier gauges in this range
- Digital-to-Analog Converters — a low-current source component that still benefits from clean, quiet AC
Frequently Asked Questions
What does 'a step up from Thunder' mean here?
AudioQuest positions Tornado one rung above Thunder in its flagship Storm Series of High (Variable) Current cables, both built around the same 20-amp ZERO-Tech rating and PSC/PSC+ conductor blend, with Tornado's construction refined further up the line.
Why does shielding matter on an AC cable?
AudioQuest builds its power cables to keep radio-frequency and electromagnetic noise from riding in on the AC line and reaching sensitive circuits. A ground wire without that shielding can act like an antenna, pulling in exactly the noise a power cable is supposed to keep out.
Do power cables wear out?
Every metal conductor oxidizes over time; it is unavoidable chemistry, not a defect. What varies is the rate. Denser, better-shielded conductors with quality plating oxidize far more slowly, so a well-made cable performs the same way for years instead of drifting.
Will this affect my system's ground safety?
No change to your safety ground. Every cable in this line keeps the full three-conductor path, hot, neutral and ground, exactly as building code requires. What differs from a stock cord is conductor quality and shielding, not the wiring topology.
Is there a step up?
Not in the AudioQuest High Current amplifier cable line we carry. Tornado High Current is the top of that range. If you want to go further, call us and we will talk through the whole chain.
