The AudioShield Classic Series Cover — Low Profile, Because the Classic Is
An acrylic dust cover made in the United States for VPI's Classic turntables. At 6.5 inches high it is the lowest cover AudioShield builds, and that is not a saving — it is matched to a turntable with a notably low plinth and a low-slung arm.
AudioShield lists four decks for it: the VPI Classic, Classic II, Classic III and Classic Signature. Those four share the proportions the cover was cut around, which is why one part serves the whole family.
Why the Height Matters Here
6.5 Inches Is the Specification
Every other cover in this range stands 10 inches or more, because the turntables they serve need it. The Classic sits lower, so a taller cover would be an oversized box on a shelf where space is usually the constraint.
It also means this is not a cover to buy for a different VPI on the assumption that bigger is safer. If your arm or a tall cartridge sits above 6.5 inches, this is the wrong part and there is no adjusting it.
Tabletop Rather Than Hinged
It stands on the shelf around the turntable rather than attaching to the plinth. Nothing is bolted to a deck VPI built to a particular mass, and a knock on the cover travels into the furniture instead of into the arm.
Dimensions and Fit
What Has to Fit
The cover measures Width 20", depth 15", height 6.5". The width and depth have to fit the shelf, since the cover rests on it, and the height has to clear the tonearm and cartridge at their highest point.
AudioShield builds the line in the United States and warrants each cover against defects in materials and workmanship for 90 days from the date of purchase from the original retailer. Note that the turntable is not included, which is less obvious from the photographs than you might expect.
Who Is the Classic Series Cover Best For?
- You own a VPI Classic, Classic II, Classic III or Classic Signature — the four decks AudioShield lists
- Your shelf is shallow — at 6.5 inches high this is the least imposing cover in the range
- Your turntable lives in the open — a cover is the difference between dusting the deck and dusting the cover
- You would rather not modify the plinth — nothing attaches, so nothing is drilled or hinged
- You own a Scout or a Prime — both are taller decks with their own covers, listed in dustcovers
How Do You Use It?
Set it down over the turntable so it rests on the shelf, and lift it straight up to take it off. With only 6.5 inches of height there is less room for error on the way down than with a taller cover, so take the arm's position into account as you lower it.
Pairs Well With
What most VPI owners keep alongside.
- Record brushes — a pass before each side, whatever the cover does
- Stylus cleaning — for the dust that reaches the stylus anyway
- Phono cartridges — what a cover is ultimately protecting
- Record mats — mat thickness affects the clearance under a cover
Frequently Asked Questions
Will it fit my turntable?
AudioShield lists the VPI Classic, Classic II, Classic III and Classic Signature. The Scout and Prime families are taller and use their own covers.
How much room does it need?
20 inches wide by 15 inches deep, standing 6.5 inches high. Measure the shelf, since the cover rests on the surface rather than on the turntable.
Will my tonearm clear it?
Check the highest point of your arm and cartridge against 6.5 inches before ordering. This is the lowest cover in the range and there is no adjustment in it.
Where is it made?
In the United States — AudioShield states the line is 100% made in the USA.
What warranty does it carry?
Ninety days against defects in materials and workmanship, from the date of purchase from the original retailer.
