Six Hundred Watts, One Channel
The 7B³ gives one whole chassis to a single speaker. Power supply, transformer, output stage and all of it drive one channel and nothing else. Each amplifier makes 600 watts into 8 ohms and 900 watts into 4.
Bryston builds the 7B³ around a specially wound transformer that runs substantially more efficiently than a normal one. The company describes it as a big step up from the well-liked 4B³, with roughly twice the power on hand for the speakers that need it.
Cooling is by convection alone, so there is no fan and nothing to whirr during a quiet passage. The enclosure and dress panel are machined and anodized aluminum, and every amplifier is made in Canada.
This listing is the silver finish with the 19-inch faceplate and front-mounted handles, sold as a single amplifier. It is the rack-friendly option, and a stereo system needs two of them.
Inside the Chassis
The Patented Salomie Circuit
Every Cubed Series amplifier starts with Bryston's patented Salomie input circuit. It is the defining piece of the Cubed generation and the reason these amplifiers measure the way they do, trapping noise before it can reach the gain stages.
Gain You Can Switch
A switch selects 23dB or 29dB of gain. That matters if you run a high-output preamp or very efficient speakers, because the lower setting gives back usable travel on the volume control instead of everything happening in the first inch.
On the Bench
Noise sits at minus 117dB on RCA and minus 119dB on XLR. Input impedance is 7.5k ohms unbalanced and 5k ohms per leg balanced. Standby draw is under 500 milliwatts, which is negligible for an amplifier of this size.
SoftStart
A microprocessor sequences the turn-on so the amplifier does not trip a circuit breaker when it wakes. With two of these on one ring, that is a practical detail rather than a specification, and a DC trigger input lets a preamp handle it for you.
Who Is This Mono Amplifier Best For?
- Owners of genuinely difficult speakers — 600 watts into 8 ohms and 900 into 4, from a chassis doing nothing else, means the amplifier stops being the weak link and the speaker gets to do what it was designed to do.
- Anyone stepping up from a 4B³ — Bryston positions the 7B³ as a substantial step above the 4B³, with about twice the power, so the upgrade is a real change rather than a small one you have to strain to hear.
- Listeners who cannot tolerate fan noise — Cooling is entirely by convection, so there is no fan in the amplifier at all and nothing to intrude on a quiet passage or a late-night listen.
- People matching an amp to an unusual preamp — The 23dB and 29dB gain settings, plus balanced XLR and single-ended RCA inputs, mean you can match a hot or a quiet preamp properly and keep real range on the volume control.
- Each listing is a single amplifier — A 7B³ drives one speaker, so a stereo system needs two of them. If you would rather have both channels in one box, the 4B³ and 14B³ live in our Stereo Amplifiers.
How Does It Connect to Your System?
Feed each amplifier one channel from your preamp, on balanced XLR or single-ended RCA, then run speaker cable from its dual binding post pairs to the speaker beside it. The two pairs of posts make bi-wiring straightforward if your speaker supports it.
Set the gain switch to suit your preamp before you start listening. A DC trigger input lets the amplifiers power up with the rest of the system, and SoftStart handles the inrush.
Pairs Well With
A pair of 7B³s needs a preamp and two of most things. Here is the list.
- Preamplifiers — balanced or single-ended, one stereo preamp feeds both. Browse preamplifiers.
- Balanced interconnects — two XLR runs, one per amplifier. Browse interconnect cables.
- Speaker cables — dual binding post pairs make bi-wiring easy. Browse speaker cables.
- Floorstanding speakers — 900 watts into 4 ohms suits the most demanding designs. Browse floorstanding speakers.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much power does one make?
Each 7B³ delivers 600 watts into 8 ohms and up to 900 watts into 4 ohms. That is per chassis, driving one speaker, so a stereo pair puts that much behind each side of your system.
How many do I need?
One per speaker. A stereo system uses two, which is the point of a mono design: the two channels share no power supply, no transformer and no chassis.
What is the difference between the faceplate options?
Both are the same amplifier. The 17-inch faceplate is the standard domestic fitting, and the 19-inch version comes with front-mounted handles for rack installation. Choose on how it will be housed.
Does it take balanced cables?
Yes. Balanced XLR and single-ended RCA inputs are both fitted, and a gain switch offers 23dB or 29dB so you can match the amplifier properly to whichever you use.
How big and heavy is it?
Each amplifier weighs 53 pounds and stands 5.8 inches high. Width is 17 or 19 inches depending on the faceplate, and depth is 15.5 inches, or 17.8 with the front handles fitted.
What warranty does it carry?
Bryston covers the 7B³ for ten years. Every amplifier is built in Canada and ships with its own factory test sheet. Call us at 800-942-0220 if you would like the current terms confirmed before you order.
