What You Need to Know
What Is This Product and What Does It Do?
A stereo preamplifier is the control center of a two-channel audio system. It picks your source — a turntable, a streamer, a CD player — adjusts the volume, and sends the signal on to your power amplifier.
The BR-20 does all of that, and much more. It is Bryston’s answer to the modern audiophile’s full front end. One box replaces four separate components: a preamplifier, a DAC (digital-to-analog converter), a network streamer, and a phono stage for vinyl.
The name means something. BR-20 stands for Brian Russell — the longtime Bryston president who passed away in September 2020 at age 68. The preamp was nearly finished when he died. Bryston’s team completed it as a tribute. On their website, Bryston calls it their “most exquisite representation of musicality ever.”
The Analog Preamp Section
The preamp circuit inside the BR-20 is a clean-sheet design. Bryston built it from scratch using all-new, fully discrete amplifier circuits — meaning no off-the-shelf chips in the signal path.
According to Bryston, the BR-20 produces the lowest noise and distortion they have ever measured in their 40-plus year history. The signal path is fully balanced from input to output. Balanced means the circuit carries two versions of the signal — one normal, one inverted — which cancels out interference picked up along the way.
The volume control is fully analog and balanced. It uses tightly matched resistors and moves in precise 0.5dB steps. A ring of small LEDs around the volume knob shows the output level from across the room. All input switching uses physical relays — no electronic switches in the signal path.
The DAC
The BR-20’s DAC (digital-to-analog converter) uses the same circuit design as Bryston’s standalone BDA-3 — a unit that sold for nearly $3,800 on its own. It handles PCM audio up to 32-bit/384kHz and DSD up to DSD256 via USB.
A re-clocking circuit inside the DAC removes jitter. Jitter is a timing error in digital audio — it causes small inconsistencies in playback that can blur the sound. The re-clocking circuit corrects those errors in real time. Independent measurements by HomeTheaterHifi.com confirmed it works as Bryston claims.
Digital inputs include AES/EBU (XLR), coaxial S/PDIF, optical TosLink, and USB-B. Maximum resolution depends on the input used — see the spec table below.
The Streamer
The BR-20 has a built-in music streamer. It is based on a Raspberry Pi 4 — a fast, modern platform that loads large music libraries quickly. The BR-20 is certified Roon Ready and also supports Tidal, Qobuz, and AirPlay.
Four USB-A ports on the rear accept drives loaded with local music files. The BR-20 does not include Wi-Fi. Bryston recommends a wired Ethernet connection and advises against Wi-Fi dongles, which they say introduce noise into the preamp’s circuitry.
The MM Phono Stage
This version includes Bryston’s moving-magnet (MM) phono stage, installed at the factory. A phono stage amplifies the very small signal from a turntable cartridge up to line level. Bryston says this internal stage matches their standalone BP2-MM phono preamplifier.
When the phono stage is installed, it uses one of the RCA inputs. You still have two balanced XLR inputs and one RCA input available for other sources.
The Headphone Amplifier
The front-panel headphone output uses a dedicated low-impedance circuit — updated from previous Bryston preamps with more power and lower output impedance. Lower output impedance means better control over a wider range of headphones. The output uses a standard 6.35mm (¼-inch) jack.
Warranty and Build
Every BR-20 is built by hand in Ontario, Canada. The analog circuitry carries Bryston’s 20-year parts-and-labor warranty. The digital components — DAC and streamer — carry a 5-year warranty.

Analog Preamp — New Design, Record-Low Measurements
The BR-20’s preamp section is a clean-sheet design built around custom, fully discrete amplifier circuits made for this product alone. Bryston says the BR-20 achieves the lowest noise and distortion in the company’s 40-plus year history.
The fully balanced circuit — from input to output — rejects common-mode noise. Common-mode noise is interference that gets picked up equally on both conductors of a balanced cable. The balanced circuit cancels it out before it reaches your amplifier.
THD+N (total harmonic distortion plus noise) is specified at or below 0.0006%. That is an extremely low figure — many excellent preamps measure ten to fifty times higher. Signal-to-noise ratio is 110dB, meaning a very quiet background even at loud listening levels.
Volume Control — Fully Analog, Precision Matched
The BR-20’s volume control is fully analog and balanced. It uses tightly matched resistors — chosen to stay accurate across the whole range of the control. Volume moves in precise 0.5dB steps. A ring of LEDs around the knob shows output level from across the room.
All source switching uses relays — physical switches that connect your source directly. There are no electronic chips in the switching path. Relay switching is quieter and more reliable over the long term.

What else do I need to use the BR-20?
The BR-20 is a preamplifier — it controls your sources and sets the volume, but it does not drive speakers on its own. You’ll need a separate power amplifier (such as a Bryston 3B³ or 4B³) and a pair of speakers. For streaming, you’ll also need a wired Ethernet connection — the BR-20 doesn’t support Wi-Fi. For vinyl, this version already includes the MM phono stage, so you can plug in a moving-magnet turntable directly.
Is the BR-20 compatible with my turntable?
This version includes a moving-magnet (MM) phono stage, so it works with any turntable that uses an MM cartridge — the most common type. What streaming services does the BR-20 support?

Does this version include the MM phono stage?
