The Bryston MM Phono Board — A Turntable Input, Built Into the Preamplifier
Sold individually, this internal board adds a moving magnet phono input to a Bryston BP-17, B135 or BR-20. It gives a moving magnet cartridge the gain and the RIAA curve it needs. Your turntable then plugs straight into the preamplifier. No second box, no extra cable, no other power supply on the shelf.
Bryston states in the BR-20 owner's manual that this is "the same circuit found in our stand alone BP-2 MM". That is a Class A discrete design with precise RIAA equalization. On its own, the BP-2 MM is rated at 41 dB of gain.
How Do You Install It?
You can have the board fitted when you order the preamplifier, or add it later. This is an internal circuit board, not a plug-in accessory, and it is static-sensitive. Leave the work to an authorized Bryston dealer or a qualified technician.
After that, your turntable goes to the RCA input the board takes over. The preamplifier then treats it as a phono source. Nothing else changes, and the board runs from the preamplifier's own power supply.
Who Is the Bryston MM Phono Board Best For?
- Owners of a BP-17, B135 or BR-20 who want vinyl in the system without adding a box, a power supply and another cable to a rack they have already worked hard on.
- Anyone running a moving magnet cartridge, which the board's gain and RIAA equalization are matched to directly.
- Buyers ordering a new Bryston preamplifier — ask for the board now and you save a later trip back to the dealer.
- Listeners who value a short signal path — the phono stage sits inside the same chassis as the line stage, with no cable between them.
- Not for a low-output moving coil cartridge, which needs far more gain than a moving magnet board provides. Pair one of our external MM/MC phono stages with a spare line input instead.
Pairs Well With
Plan the installation alongside these:
- A moving magnet cartridge — this board is built around that output level, and the match is what the circuit was designed for.
- A quality tonearm cable — it carries the smallest signal in the system before the board ever sees it.
- A turntable — if the Bryston is going in first, the deck it will feed is the next decision.
- Record cleaning supplies — a phono stage of this quality will reveal whatever is on the record surface.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which models does it fit?
It fits the Bryston BP-17, B135 and BR-20. Which input it takes, and how it goes in, can differ by model and revision. Check compatibility with your exact version before you order.
Will I lose an input?
Yes, and this is the point to be clear about. Bryston's BR-20 manual states that the optional MM phono input "occupies RCA 1, so RCA 1 can no longer be used for line level source components such as tuners, CD players, etc." Count your line sources first.
How many do I need?
One board per preamplifier. It is sold individually, and a single board adds the phono input to one BP-17, B135 or BR-20. There is no benefit to a second one in the same unit.
