One Box for Any Cartridge
The Cambridge Audio Alva Duo is a phono preamp. It boosts the tiny signal from your turntable. Then it sends that signal to your amp.
It works with both main cartridge types. Moving magnet cartridges get 39dB of gain. Moving coil cartridges get 60dB.
This is the step up from Cambridge's own Alva Solo. The Solo only handles moving magnet cartridges. The Duo adds moving coil support. It also adds a headphone jack.
A steel-and-aluminum case houses the circuit. It's small enough to sit near your turntable without getting in the way.
Built for Clean, Quiet Sound
Input impedance is 47k ohms for moving magnet and 100 ohms for moving coil. Input capacitance sits at 100pF.
RIAA accuracy is rated at ±0.3dB across 30Hz to 50kHz. That's the curve your records were cut with. Getting it right matters for correct tone.
Noise stays low on both settings. Signal-to-noise ratio tops 90dB on moving magnet and 70dB on moving coil.
A 6.35mm headphone jack sits on the front. You can listen straight from your turntable without turning on the rest of your system.
It measures 1.9 by 8.5 by 6.2 inches. It weighs just over 2 pounds. A ground terminal sits on the back. It helps cut hum from your turntable's earth wire.
What Reviewers Are Saying
Simon Lucas reviewed the Duo for Trusted Reviews in April 2019. He called it "a lush, broad-beamed listen," and said it's "adaptable enough to be useful in virtually any price-appropriate system."
He also praised its dynamics. The Duo, he wrote, "positively revels in sticking a load of distance between the quietest and loudest parts."
Andrew Dewhirst reviewed it for Future Audiophile in April 2025. He wrote that each note had "room to breathe" and that the Duo "enhanced my vinyl experience" overall.
Who Is This Preamp Best For?
- Anyone with a moving coil cartridge. Its 60dB gain setting gives low-output MC cartridges the boost they need.
- Listeners who also want a headphone amp. The Duo's front-panel jack lets you listen without waking the rest of your system.
- Shoppers who want proven, independently reviewed sound. Named reviewers praised its clean, dynamic sound.
- Anyone stepping up from the Alva Solo. The Duo adds moving coil support the Solo doesn't have.
- Not the right fit for anyone who only owns a moving magnet cartridge. The Solo covers that at a lower price. The Duo's MC gain would just go unused.
How Does It Connect to Your System?
Run your turntable's phono cable into the Duo's MM or MC input. Pick whichever matches your cartridge type. Then connect the RCA output to a line-level input on your amp.
Attach your turntable's ground wire to the rear terminal to help quiet any hum. Plug headphones into the front jack any time you want to listen on your own.
Pairs Well With
Building your system? Here are some great companions for the Cambridge Audio Alva Duo:
- Turntables without a built-in phono stage
- Phono cartridges, MM or MC, matched to its gain settings
- Interconnect cables to connect its output to your amp
Frequently Asked Questions
How is this different from the Alva Solo?
The Solo only supports moving magnet cartridges. The Duo adds moving coil support and a headphone jack.
Does it have a headphone output?
Yes. A 6.35mm jack on the front lets you listen to your turntable through headphones.
Can I adjust the loading for my cartridge?
Input impedance is fixed at 47k ohms for MM and 100 ohms for MC. There's no user-adjustable loading beyond that.
What's the warranty?
Cambridge Audio covers the Alva Duo for two years, extendable to three years with product registration.
