What You Need to Know
What Is the L/R X?
The L/R X is a pair of speakers made by Cambridge Audio. Each speaker has its own amplifier built right inside. That means you do not need a separate stereo receiver or amplifier box. You just plug the speakers in, connect them to your music, and start listening. Speakers built this way are called "active" speakers, because the amp lives inside the speaker instead of a separate box.
The L/R X is the biggest and most powerful model in Cambridge Audio's new L/R line. It is built for people who want the deep, full sound of large floor-standing speakers, but do not want a stack of separate boxes and cables to get there.
How the L/R X Makes Your Music Sound Better
Cambridge Audio built a new tweeter (the small driver that plays high notes, like cymbals and violins) called the Torus™ tweeter. Inside, it is shaped like a donut, which helps stop echoes from bouncing around and muddying the sound. The result is treble that stays clear and detailed.
Each speaker also has two 5-inch woofers (larger drivers that play bass and midrange) plus a passive radiator (a driver with no amp of its own that helps push out more bass). One woofer faces forward, and the other faces down toward the base. Splitting the work this way lets each driver focus on what it does best.
Together, the drivers can play bass down to about 35Hz. That is deep enough that most listeners will not need a separate subwoofer — though the L/R X does have a subwoofer output if you want to add one later.
Inside each speaker, a 64-bit digital signal processor (a small onboard computer) handles the crossover work and keeps the sound balanced at any volume, using a Cambridge Audio feature called DynamEQ. With 800 watts of total power (400 watts in each speaker), the L/R X has plenty of headroom for loud nights, and built-in protection keeps the sound clean instead of distorting when you push the volume up.
What People Are Saying
The L/R X is brand new, so full lab reviews are not out yet. But early hands-on demos from What Hi-Fi? and T3 were positive, and eCoustics named the L/R X to its Best of CES list when Cambridge Audio unveiled it in January 2026. You can read full details in the Reviews section below.
Who Is the L/R X Best For?
You want big, room-filling sound without a rack of separate stereo boxes.
You want to stream Spotify, Tidal, or Qobuz straight to your speakers, with no extra streaming box required.
You want to connect a turntable, TV, or laptop without buying a pile of separate boxes and cables.
You have a larger room or open floor plan and want real volume and deep bass.
You want a speaker that looks as sharp as it sounds, in a bold color you pick yourself.
How It Connects to Your System
The L/R X is built to plug straight into the rest of your setup. It has an HDMI eARC input, so you can send sound from your TV straight to the speakers. It has a built-in phono stage, so a turntable with a standard cartridge can plug in directly — no separate phono preamp needed. There is also a USB-C audio input for a computer, an optical (Toslink) input, an analog RCA input, and a subwoofer output if you want extra bass later.
For streaming, the L/R X connects to your Wi-Fi or Ethernet network and uses Cambridge Audio's StreamMagic platform to play Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, Qobuz Connect, Amazon Music, Deezer, Roon, internet radio, Google Cast, and Apple AirPlay 2 — all without a separate streaming box.
The two speakers talk to each other over a wireless connection called WiSA HT, or you can use the included 5-meter USB-C cable for a wired link. Either way, the connection runs at 24-bit/96kHz, so you are not giving up any sound quality by going wireless.

Reviews & Early Recognition
eCoustics — Best of CES 2026
eCoustics named the L/R X to its Best of CES list at the product's January 2026 debut, calling it out as one of the show's standout new audio launches.
What Hi-Fi? — Early Hands-On, January 6, 2026
After a first listen at Cambridge Audio's London headquarters, senior writer Harry McKerrell described the L/R X as "a clear, clean and rhythmically sound performer." This was an early hands-on demo, not a full lab review, but the early word is promising.
T3 — Early Hands-On, January 6, 2026
Tech editor Mike called the L/R X "an absolutely storming integrated speaker setup" after hearing it at the same London launch event. Like the What Hi-Fi? demo, this was a preview listen ahead of a full review.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a separate amplifier or receiver?
No. Each L/R X speaker has its own amplifier built in, so you do not need a separate stereo receiver or power amp. Just plug the speakers into power, connect your source (or your Wi-Fi network for streaming), and you are ready to listen.
Do I need to buy a subwoofer too?
Most listeners will not need one. The L/R X plays bass down to about 35Hz on its own, which covers the low end of most music and movies. If you want even deeper bass for movie nights, the speakers do have a subwoofer output, so you can always add one later.
Can I connect my turntable directly?
Yes, as long as your turntable uses a standard moving-magnet cartridge. The L/R X has a phono stage built in, so you do not need a separate phono preamp. Just run a cable from your turntable to the phono input on the back of the speaker.
Do I need a cable to connect the two speakers to each other?
Not necessarily. The speakers can link wirelessly using a technology called WiSA HT. If you would rather have a rock-solid wired connection, a 5-meter USB-C cable is included in the box.
Will this work with my TV?
Yes. The L/R X has an HDMI eARC input, so you can connect it to a TV that supports eARC and use the speakers for your TV sound, with volume control from your TV remote.
What is the difference between the L/R X and the L/R M?
The L/R X is the flagship model, with 800 watts of total power, dual 5-inch woofers, and dual 6-inch passive radiators per speaker. The L/R M is a smaller sibling with 300 watts of total power and a more compact size, built for smaller rooms. Both share the same Torus tweeter and StreamMagic streaming platform.
What streaming services can I use?
The L/R X supports Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, Qobuz Connect, Amazon Music, Deezer, Roon, internet radio, Google Cast, and Apple AirPlay 2, all built into the speakers through Cambridge Audio's StreamMagic app.
What else do I need to get started?
For most people, nothing else is required — just the speakers, a Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection, and a music source. If you plan to add a turntable, TV, or subwoofer, you may want the matching cables from our Cables section. Give us a call if you would like help planning your setup.
What colors are available?
The L/R X comes in Black, White, Blue, Green, Orange, and a premium Real Walnut finish.
