No DAC Chip—A Custom FPGA Instead

Chord doesn’t use off-the-shelf converter chips. Digital designer Rob Watts programs the Mojo 2’s FPGA from scratch, running a 40,960-tap filter across 40 DSP cores—processing power orders of magnitude beyond conventional DACs. The measured results are extraordinary: 0.0003% distortion, 125dB dynamic range, and a vanishing 0.06-ohm output impedance.

It plays PCM to 32-bit/768kHz and DSD to DSD256, and drives headphones from sensitive IEMs to 800-ohm studio classics with 600mW on tap.
