Built in Denmark, Sized for a Shelf
The Opticon 1 Mk2 is the compact standmount in DALI’s Opticon Mk2 range, and the point where DALI’s passive speakers move to Danish assembly. A 4.75-inch wood fiber woofer and a 29 mm soft dome tweeter cross over at 3,000 Hz in a cabinet just over 10 inches tall.
It is also the Opticon designed to live near a wall. DALI supplies a keyhole wall bracket and rates placement from under an inch to 31 inches from the wall behind. That makes it the rare serious two-way that works in the spot most rooms actually have free.
The 29 mm Tweeter Borrowed From Callisto
DALI says "The lightweight 29 mm soft dome tweeter is derived from our CALLISTO C series and offers significant advances over the tweeters used in the OPTICON MK1 series." The slightly larger dome lowers distortion and lets the crossover sit lower than a 1-inch dome would allow.
The Numbers, and What They Ask of You
DALI quotes 62 Hz to 25 kHz within 3 dB. Sensitivity is 85 dB and nominal impedance is 4 ohms, so the recommended 25 to 100 watts should come from an amplifier that is comfortable into 4 ohms. Peak output is 105 dB.
Each cabinet measures 10.3 by 6.0 by 9.1 inches and weighs 9.9 pounds. The rear port is tuned to 61.5 Hz. Finishes are Satin Black, Satin White and Tobacco Oak, with black grille cloth on the two darker cabinets and light gray on the white.
SMC, the Magnet That Cuts Distortion
The pole piece in the woofer motor is made entirely of DALI’s Soft Magnetic Composite. In DALI’s words, "The use of SMC greatly reduces mechanical distortion caused by hysteresis and eddy currents", which is why a small speaker can sound relaxed rather than strained at volume.
Assembled in Pairs, in Denmark
DALI puts it plainly: "Speakers used and enjoyed in pairs should also be built as pairs!" Each stereo pair is built and tested in sequence by one technician from the same batch of parts. The Opticon Mk2 range is also where DALI’s own dual-flare port design arrives, which the company says "brings port design into the realm of aerodynamics".
Who Are These Bookshelf Speakers Best For?
- The speakers must sit close to a wall — a wall bracket is in the box, and DALI rates placement from under an inch off the wall behind
- Your room is small or medium — DALI designed the smallest Opticon for exactly that, with 105 dB of headroom for a room that size
- You already own a capable amplifier — 4 ohms nominal and 85 dB reward current; one of our integrated amplifiers rated into 4 ohms is the match
- Where it is made matters to you — the Opticon Mk2 range is assembled and pair-tested at DALI’s own factory in Denmark
- You may want the bigger brother later — the Opticon 2 Mk2 shares the tweeter and adds a 6.5-inch woofer; both are in our DALI collection
How Do They Connect to Your System?
Speaker cable runs from your amplifier to a single pair of binding posts on each cabinet, red to red and black to black, with both runs the same length. These are passive speakers, so there is nothing else to power or configure.
DALI voices its speakers to face straight ahead, so skip the toe-in. On a stand, bring the tweeter to ear height. On the wall, use the supplied bracket and the rubber bumpers, and let the port breathe.
Pairs Well With
What finishes the setup. These are the categories most Opticon 1 Mk2 owners shop next.
- Speaker stands — when the wall is not the plan
- Integrated amplifiers — 25 to 100 watts, rated into 4 ohms
- Speaker cables — a sensible gauge for a 4 ohm load
- Subwoofers — the natural partner below 62 Hz
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the Opticon 1 Mk2 sold as a pair?
Yes. The price is for a matched pair, built and tested together at DALI’s factory in Denmark.
Why does the amplifier matter more here?
Because the load is 4 ohms and sensitivity is 85 dB. A receiver rated only into 8 ohms will run warm and short of headroom. An amplifier that quotes a 4 ohm power figure will not.
Can I mount them on a wall?
Yes. A keyhole wall bracket and rubber bumpers are included, and DALI rates them from under an inch off the wall. You supply screws and anchors suited to your wall.
How does it differ from the Opticon 2 Mk2?
The Opticon 2 Mk2 uses a 6.5-inch woofer in a larger cabinet, reaches 59 Hz and plays louder, but it is not wall-mountable. Same tweeter, same Danish build.
What finishes are there?
Satin Black, Satin White and Tobacco Oak. Grilles are included and attach to the baffle.
Do I need a subwoofer?
For music in a small room, usually not. DALI quotes 62 Hz within 3 dB, and near-wall placement adds a little. For film, a subwoofer completes the picture.
