The Opticon Standmount With Room to Breathe
The Opticon 2 Mk2 is the mid-sized standmount in DALI’s Danish-built Opticon Mk2 range. A 6.5-inch wood fiber woofer and a 29 mm soft dome tweeter cross over at 2,000 Hz in a cabinet just under 14 inches tall. This listing is for one speaker, so add two for stereo.
DALI describes it as a speaker "for compact to medium size listening spaces where it has room to breathe and deliver its dynamic and explicitly defined performance". The larger woofer and cabinet buy deeper bass and more headroom than the smaller Opticon, and every unit is assembled at DALI’s own factory in Denmark.
The 29 mm Tweeter Borrowed From Callisto
DALI says "The lightweight 29 mm soft dome tweeter is derived from our CALLISTO C series and offers significant advances over the tweeters used in the OPTICON MK1 series." The slightly larger dome lowers distortion and lets the crossover sit at 2,000 Hz, lower than a 1-inch dome would allow.
The Numbers, and What They Ask of You
DALI quotes 59 Hz to 25 kHz within 3 dB. Sensitivity is 86.5 dB and nominal impedance is 4 ohms, so the recommended 30 to 150 watts should come from an amplifier comfortable into 4 ohms. Peak output is 107 dB, with the rear port tuned to 46 Hz.
Each cabinet measures 13.8 by 7.7 by 11.7 inches and weighs 17 pounds. DALI recommends 4 to 31 inches from the wall behind, on a stand or a deep shelf. Finishes are Satin Black, Satin White and Tobacco Oak, and rubber feet are included in the box.
SMC, the Magnet That Cuts Distortion
The pole piece in the woofer motor is made entirely of DALI’s Soft Magnetic Composite. In DALI’s words, "The use of SMC greatly reduces mechanical distortion caused by hysteresis and eddy currents", which is why a speaker this size can sound relaxed rather than strained at volume.
Why the Port Shape Matters
As a reflex design, the Opticon 2 Mk2 uses the woofer’s rear output to extend the bass. DALI flares both ends of the port to keep airflow smooth at volume; in its words the design "brings port design into the realm of aerodynamics". The practical result is bass that stays clean when you turn it up.
Who Is This Bookshelf Speaker Best For?
- Your room is medium-sized — 59 Hz, 107 dB and a 6.5-inch driver are floorstander numbers in a standmount box
- You already own a capable amplifier — 4 ohms nominal rewards current; one of our integrated amplifiers rated into 4 ohms is the match
- You would rather not chase placement — DALI voices its speakers to fire straight ahead, so there is no toe-in angle to dial in
- You are building a system, not just a pair — DALI makes a matching Opticon Vokal Mk2 center and LCR Mk2 on-wall, all in our DALI collection
- Where it is made matters to you — the Opticon Mk2 range is assembled and tested at DALI’s own factory in Denmark
How Does It Connect to Your System?
Speaker cable runs from your amplifier to a single pair of binding posts on each cabinet, red to red and black to black, with both runs the same length. These are passive speakers, so there is nothing else to power or configure.
Set them on stands with the tweeter at ear height, faced straight ahead rather than angled in, and leave a hand’s width or more behind the port. A 4 ohm speaker also deserves a cable of sensible gauge for the length of the run.
Pairs Well With
What finishes the setup. These are the categories most Opticon 2 Mk2 owners shop next.
- Speaker stands — 17 pounds and nearly 12 inches deep belongs on a stand
- Integrated amplifiers — 30 to 150 watts, rated into 4 ohms
- Speaker cables — a sensible gauge for a 4 ohm load
- Subwoofers — optional at 59 Hz, but there for film
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the price for one speaker or a pair?
One speaker. Add two to your cart for a stereo pair, or one to complete a surround system.
Why does the amplifier matter more here?
Because the load is 4 ohms. Sensitivity is a healthy 86.5 dB, but a receiver rated only into 8 ohms will run warm and short of headroom. An amplifier that quotes a 4 ohm power figure will not.
Will it fit on a bookshelf?
A deep one. The cabinet is 11.7 inches deep and DALI asks for 4 inches behind the port, so a stand or an open media unit is the better home.
Can I use it in a home theater?
Yes. DALI built the Opticon Mk2 range with a matching center channel and an on-wall LCR model, and the shared 29 mm tweeter keeps the tonal character consistent across channels.
What finishes are there?
Satin Black, Satin White and Tobacco Oak. Grilles are included and attach to the baffle.
Do I need a subwoofer?
Not for most music. DALI quotes 59 Hz within 3 dB from a 6.5-inch driver, which covers bass guitar and kick drum. Add one for film or the lowest electronic bass.
