The Small One in DALI’s New Range, and Why It Punches Up

The Sonik 1 is the smallest speaker in DALI’s Sonik series, the Danish company’s new entry range launched in 2026. A 5.25-inch Clarity Cone woofer and a 29 mm soft dome tweeter share a cabinet under 11 inches tall, crossing over at 2,800 Hz. DALI’s own line: "SONIK 1 proves great sound doesn’t need space."

Two reviews so far, both five stars. That is unusual for an entry model, and the reason is not marketing. DALI builds its own drivers, and the technology in this one came down from its Kore flagship: a paper-and-wood-fiber cone, and a magnet system designed to lower distortion rather than raise output.

Clarity Cone, and What the Wood Is For

DALI mixes fine paper pulp with wood fibers. The fibers leave the cone surface deliberately uneven, which breaks up resonances in the cone itself, and the mix stays light and stiff at the same time. The payoff is a cleaner upper midrange and an easier handover to the tweeter.

The Numbers, and What They Ask of You

DALI quotes 51 Hz to 26 kHz within 3 dB. Sensitivity is 86 dB, nominal impedance is 6 ohms, and the recommended amplifier is 25 to 100 watts. Peak output is 106 dB, and the rear port is tuned to 51 Hz. None of that asks much of an amplifier.

Each cabinet measures 10.8 by 6.4 by 9.1 inches and weighs 9 pounds with its grille. DALI recommends anywhere from half an inch to 20 inches from the wall behind, and a wall bracket is built into the back of the cabinet.

SMC, the Magnet That Cuts Distortion

DALI’s patented Soft Magnetic Composite sits in the woofer’s pole piece, where it reduces the eddy currents and hysteresis that add distortion to an ordinary iron motor. DALI says the result is "cleaner, more detailed and relaxed midrange performance". It is the same idea used in its dearest speakers.

What Reviewers Are Saying

TechRadar’s James Grimshaw gave them five stars on April 21, 2026: "They fill small and medium spaces capably, handle loud signals with minimal distortion, and deliver gratifying performance from wherever you sit or stand."

What Hi-Fi? followed with five stars on August 17, 2026. Ioan Hazell wrote: "Their capacity for scale, both sonic and emotional, comes as a welcome surprise given their dainty stature."

Grimshaw’s summary: "The Dali Sonik 1 are not the first of their type, and won’t be the last — but they’re among the best." Both reviewers made the same placement point: fire them straight ahead, not angled in.

• The speakers have to go on a shelf or a wall — the bracket is built in, and DALI rates them for placement from half an inch off the wall

• You want a range to grow into — the Sonik 3 is the larger standmount in the same series, and the whole DALI range shares the same voicing

How Do They Connect to Your System?

Speaker cable runs from your amplifier to a single pair of binding posts on each cabinet, red to red and black to black, with both runs the same length. The posts take banana plugs, spades or bare wire. These are passive speakers, so there is nothing else to power or configure.

Point them straight ahead rather than toward your seat. What Hi-Fi? found they "sound most well-balanced when facing straight ahead with a gap of around 20cm between the back of the speakers and our testing room’s rear wall", which is about 8 inches.

Are the Sonik 1 sold as a pair?

Yes. The price is for two speakers, with two magnetic grilles, rubber feet and rubber wall pads in the box.

How much amplifier do I need?

DALI recommends 25 to 100 watts into 6 ohms. What Hi-Fi? tested them with modest and mid-priced integrateds and found they worked well with both, and gained detail with a better one.

Can I mount them on a wall?

Yes. The bracket is part of the cabinet, and DALI includes rubber wall pads. You supply screws and anchors suited to your wall.

Stand or shelf?

Both work, and DALI designed for both. A stand gives the best stereo image; a solid shelf is fine when floor space is short, provided the port has a little room behind it.

How does the Sonik 3 differ?

The Sonik 3 uses a 7-inch woofer in a taller cabinet, reaches 47 Hz, and plays 2 dB louder. The Sonik 1 is smaller, wall-mountable and easier to place. Both are in our DALI collection.

Do I need a subwoofer?

Not for most music in a small room. TechRadar found the bass "certainly remarkable" for the size but leaning on the port, so add a subwoofer for film or for deep electronic bass.
