The Dual CS 418 keeps the ritual of cueing a record by hand, while still handling the parts that trip up a first-timer. An Ortofon 2M Red moving-magnet cartridge arrives pre-mounted and aligned, and a phono preamp is already built in behind a rear switch.

The 305mm platter weighs 850 grams complete with its included 2.5mm rubber mat, sized and damped to keep resonance out of the groove. A belt-drive DC motor turns it, decoupled from the plinth to keep motor noise out of the signal.

A Tonearm Built to Be Upgraded

Four precision ball bearings support the straight tonearm tube, letting it track the groove with very little friction. Tracking force and anti-skating both adjust by hand, matched to the 2M Red's recommended range of roughly 1.6 to 2.0 grams.

Because the arm is fully adjustable rather than fixed, a future cartridge upgrade is a real option here in a way it isn't on Dual's automatic entry model. The Ortofon 2M Red itself is an all-purpose MM design known for open, dynamic sound with a touch of warmth.
