Major in Every Aspect Except Price
The EAT C-Major Turntable brings much of the engineering philosophy of EAT’s more expensive C-Sharp to a smaller, more attainable design. Its low-profile construction combines a rigid MDF chassis, carbon-fiber laminated subchassis and thermoplastic elastomer damping to give the platter, bearing and tonearm a quiet, stable foundation.
Carbon Fiber, Aluminum and Carefully Controlled Resonance
The C-Major uses a floating subchassis separated from the main chassis by TPE damping elements. This construction helps prevent motor noise and external vibration from reaching the record groove. Its damped aluminum-alloy platter uses TPE inserts to control resonance, while three adjustable aluminum feet provide additional isolation and make accurate leveling easier.
The 9-Inch EAT C-Note Tonearm
At the heart of the C-Major is EAT’s sophisticated 9-inch C-Note tonearm. Its carbon-fiber arm tube and aluminum headshell combine low resonance with the rigidity needed for precise cartridge control. A hybrid Cardan and unipivot bearing system is damped with silicone grease to reduce unwanted movement while preserving smooth, responsive tracking.
The tonearm also provides adjustable tracking force, anti-skating and vertical tracking angle, allowing the C-Major to accommodate a wide selection of moving-magnet and moving-coil cartridges. RCA outputs make it easy to select or upgrade the phono cable.
Choose the Cartridge That Fits Your System
The EAT C-Major is available in three versions:
- No Cartridge: The best choice if you already own a favorite cartridge or want to build a carefully selected analog front end.
- Ortofon Quintet Blue: A versatile low-output moving-coil cartridge with a Nude Elliptical stylus. It offers an open, detailed and rhythmically engaging presentation.
- EAT Jo No. 5: EAT’s premium low-output moving-coil cartridge, featuring a Nude Fine Line stylus for greater groove contact, refined detail retrieval and precise imaging. The Jo No. 5 is supplied but not mounted.
Both cartridge-equipped versions require a phono preamplifier with moving-coil compatibility. The C-Major does not include a built-in phono stage.
Is the EAT C-Major Right for You?
- Choose it if: You want high-end turntable construction without moving into the price range of EAT’s larger reference models.
- Choose it if: You value a sophisticated, fully adjustable tonearm that can support future cartridge upgrades.
- Choose it if: You prefer a compact, understated turntable with carbon-fiber and aluminum construction.
- Choose the no-cartridge version if: You already have a suitable cartridge or want help selecting one for your system.
- Choose the Quintet Blue version if: You want an excellent-value moving-coil package with an energetic and detailed presentation.
- Choose the Jo No. 5 version if: You want finer groove tracing, greater resolution and a cartridge designed to complement EAT’s tonearm.
- Keep in mind: Changing between 33⅓ and 45 rpm requires manually repositioning the drive belt.
Setup and System Matching
The C-Major is shipped partially disassembled to protect its precision components. Setup includes removing the transport screws, installing the feet, sub-platter, belt, platter and counterweight, and then setting tracking force and anti-skating. The included hinged dust cover protects the turntable when it is not in use.
The no-cartridge version requires cartridge installation, alignment and calibration. The Ortofon Quintet Blue version should still be checked for correct tracking force and alignment after unpacking. The EAT Jo No. 5 package includes the cartridge unmounted, so professional installation is recommended unless you are comfortable aligning and calibrating a moving-coil cartridge.
Because the Quintet Blue and Jo No. 5 are low-output moving-coil cartridges, they require an MC-compatible phono preamp with appropriate gain and loading. Audio Advisor can help you select a phono stage that matches your chosen cartridge and the rest of your system.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the EAT C-Major include a cartridge?
It is available without a cartridge, with an Ortofon Quintet Blue moving-coil cartridge or with an EAT Jo No. 5 moving-coil cartridge. The Jo No. 5 is supplied but not mounted.
Does it have a built-in phono preamp?
No. A separate phono preamplifier is required. The Quintet Blue and Jo No. 5 versions need a phono stage with moving-coil capability.
How do I change from 33⅓ to 45 rpm?
Speed is changed manually by moving the drive belt to the appropriate motor-pulley position.
Is a dust cover included?
Yes. The C-Major includes a hinged dust cover.
Can I install a different cartridge?
Yes. The adjustable C-Note tonearm and supplied counterweight system accommodate a broad selection of cartridges. Cartridge weight, compliance and phono-stage compatibility should be considered when choosing an alternative.
How much space does it require?
The turntable measures approximately 18.1 inches wide by 13.9 inches deep. Additional vertical and rear clearance is required to open the hinged dust cover fully.
The EAT C-Major is an excellent step into serious analog playback, combining purposeful engineering, a highly capable tonearm and flexible cartridge options in an elegant, compact design.
