The Big Debut, Third Time Around

The Debut 3.0 DB63, sold here as the B6.3, is the larger of ELAC's two third-generation Debut standmounts. A new 1-inch aluminum dome tweeter sits above a 6.5-inch aramid-fiber woofer in a rear-ported cabinet a little over 13 inches tall.

The aluminum dome replaces the cloth dome ELAC used on the earlier Debut 2.0 and carries an integrated aluminum phase plug for controlled dispersion. The aramid-fiber cone gets a larger magnet and voice coil. The crossover sits at 2,000 Hz.

Built to Be Driven by Anything

ELAC rates the B6.3 at 87 dB sensitivity into 6 ohms, which is high for a budget standmount. The company says the whole Debut 3.0 line was tuned to need less power than lower-impedance rivals, so a small receiver is fair game.

ELAC quotes 42 Hz to 38 kHz at minus 6 dB, 87 dB sensitivity at 2.83 volts and a 6 ohm nominal impedance. Recommended amplifier power is 20 to 140 watts, with 120 watts peak handling. Any integrated amplifier or receiver will do the job.

How Much Room It Takes

Each cabinet is 7.7 inches wide, 13.3 tall and 11.7 deep, and weighs 17.3 pounds. The dual-flared port fires to the rear, so ELAC's manual asks for one to two feet from walls and corners. Magnetic grilles and 5-way metal binding posts are standard.

How Do They Connect to Your System?

Speaker cable runs from your amplifier to a single pair of 5-way binding posts on each cabinet, red to red and black to black. These are passive speakers, so there is nothing else to power or configure.

Give the rear port a foot or two of space, keep the rear-wall and side-wall distances unequal, and toe the speakers in a little. ELAC's manual recommends 16-gauge cable or heavier for runs up to 25 feet.
