Focal's Entry Point, Made in France

The Theva N1 is the standmount in Focal's Theva range, the line the company positions as a first step into serious hi-fi. It pairs a 1-inch aluminum-magnesium inverted dome tweeter with a 6.5-inch Slatefiber mid/bass driver. The rear-ported cabinet is a little over 15 inches tall.

Both drivers are made in Focal's workshops in France. The Slatefiber cone blends non-woven recycled carbon fiber with a thermoplastic polymer for stiffness, damping and low mass. The TNF tweeter mounts its dome on a Poron foam suspension. Focal says that cuts distortion between 2 and 3 kHz by a factor of three.

A Tilted Stand Is Part of the Design

Focal offers a dedicated Theva stand that tilts the speaker back to time-align the drivers toward the listener. On a shelf, the speaker sits on the four rubber bumpers Focal includes in the box, with spikes and a magnetic grille also supplied.

The Numbers, and What They Ask of You

Focal quotes 58 Hz to 28 kHz within 3 dB, with the low end reaching 49 Hz at minus 6 dB. Sensitivity is 89 dB. Nominal impedance is 8 ohms with a 4.6 ohm minimum. Focal recommends 25 to 100 watts, and What Hi-Fi? suggests an amplifier with some grunt for that dip.

How Much Room It Takes

Each cabinet is 8.4 inches wide, 15.4 tall and 10.3 deep. The port is on the back, so What Hi-Fi? advises at least 16 inches from the rear wall. Beyond that, the reviewers found placement undemanding. A slight toe-in toward the seat worked best.

The reservations: the "Presentation lacks a little verve and rhythmic precision" and the "Treble sounds a little exposed and tizzy on occasion," which is where a smooth amplifier helps.

How Do They Connect to Your System?

Speaker cable runs from your amplifier to a single pair of binding posts on each cabinet, red to red and black to black. These are passive speakers, so there is nothing else to power or configure.

Fit the bumpers for a shelf or the spikes for the Theva stand. Keep at least 16 inches behind the cabinet and angle each speaker slightly toward the seat. Give the drivers a few weeks of playing before judging the bass.
