A Floorstanding Speaker, Ready for Dolby Atmos
The Focal Theva N°3-D is a 3-way floorstanding speaker with a built-in, upward-firing driver for Dolby Atmos height effects. It is the Atmos version of Focal's Theva N°3 tower.
Two 6.5-inch Slatefiber bass drivers handle the low end, with a third 6.5-inch Slatefiber driver covering the midrange. A 1-inch Al/Mg inverted dome TNF tweeter tops off the front baffle.
A dedicated 5-inch full-range driver fires upward from its own angled baffle. It bounces Atmos height channels off your ceiling. No second pair of speakers to mount overhead, and no holes in the plaster.
The N°3-D comes in Black High Gloss, Dark Wood and Light Wood. That covers most rooms, whether you want the speakers to stand out or settle into the furniture.
Built for Both Movies and Music
The front-firing drivers span 48Hz to 28kHz. The Atmos driver covers a narrower 100Hz to 20kHz band. That suits effects rather than full-range music, which is the job Atmos actually asks of it. Sensitivity rates at 91dB.
Impedance measures 8 ohms nominal, dipping to 2.9 ohms minimum on the main drivers. The Atmos driver runs at 6 ohms. That 2.9-ohm dip is the figure to watch when choosing an amplifier. Focal recommends between 40 and 250 watts.
The crossover splits duties at 270Hz and 2700Hz. That keeps each driver working in its ideal range. A Poron foam surround on the tweeter helps cut distortion between 2 and 3kHz.
At just over 40 inches tall and about 48.5 pounds with its grille, the N°3-D has real presence. The footprint stays modest, so it does not eat the room the way its height suggests.
What Reviewers Are Saying
Jason Methfessel reviewed the Theva N°3-D for The Absolute Sound. He noted it offers "everything the Theva No. 3 offers plus" its up-firing Atmos driver.
After trying several setups, he wrote that "the most enjoyable experience was 2.0.2," using the N°3-D's own height channel instead of ceiling speakers.
Taps Das, HomeTheaterHiFi.com, said the up-firing driver's height effects felt convincing, like real ceiling speakers, though the treble could turn a little sibilant at higher volume when the towers were toed in toward the seat.
Who Is This Speaker Best For?
- Anyone building a Dolby Atmos system without ceiling speakers — the built-in up-firing driver delivers height effects without running wire through your ceiling
- Movie and music listeners who want one set of towers for both — reviewers praised its clear, detailed sound on music as well as film soundtracks
- Anyone short on space for a full 5.1.2 or 7.1.4 setup — combining front and height channels in one tower simplifies a smaller room's layout
- Shoppers who want a proven, widely reviewed speaker — multiple independent reviewers praised its Atmos performance and overall sound
- Your ceiling speakers are already in — the up-firing driver does the job they do, so it would sit unused. Without them, this is how you get height effects without cutting into the ceiling. Pair it with our home theater receivers that decode Atmos
How Does It Connect to Your System?
Connect the main input to your AV receiver's front left and right speaker outputs, just as with the standard Theva N°3. Its 2.9-ohm minimum impedance calls for an amp comfortable with a demanding load.
Wire the Atmos driver's separate input to your receiver's height or Atmos-enabled speaker output. Most modern AV receivers support this connection directly.
Run your receiver's room correction and speaker setup routine afterward. That lets it calibrate the up-firing driver alongside your other speakers.
Pairs Well With
Building your system? Here are some great companions for the Focal Theva N°3-D:
- AV receivers with Dolby Atmos processing and height channel outputs
- Subwoofers to extend bass further for movies and music alike
- Speaker cables to wire both its main and Atmos driver inputs
- Audio racks to house the electronics driving your new towers
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need ceiling speakers for Dolby Atmos with this speaker?
Its built-in up-firing driver reflects height effects off your ceiling. So no separate ceiling or wall speakers are required.
How is this different from the standard Theva N°3?
The N°3-D adds a dedicated 5-inch up-firing driver for Dolby Atmos height effects. Its front-facing drivers and cabinet are otherwise the same as the standard N°3.
How much amplifier power do I need?
Focal recommends 40 to 250 watts per channel. Its 91dB sensitivity means it plays comfortably loud without needing the upper end of that range.
What finishes are available?
Black High Gloss, Dark Wood, and Light Wood are all available, covering both painted and wood-veneer looks.
What's the warranty?
Focal covers the N°3-D for one year against manufacturing defects, extendable to three years when purchased from and installed by an authorized dealer.
