Under Three Inches Deep, With a Ribbon Tweeter
The SuperSat 3 is GoldenEar's slim satellite: a 12.6-inch cabinet only 2.8 inches deep, built to sit on a shelf, hang on a wall or stand beside a TV. It carries GoldenEar's High-Velocity Folded Ribbon tweeter between two 4.5-inch cast-basket mid/bass drivers. It is sold one speaker at a time.
The cabinet is molded from a marble-powder-infused polymer for stiffness and low resonance, and finished in piano gloss black. A table stand comes in the box, and the back carries a keyhole slot and a threaded insert for GoldenEar's SuperSwivel wall bracket.
Why the Tweeter Matters in a Satellite
The HVFR is the same air-motion transformer design GoldenEar puts in its Triton towers. In a satellite it means wide dispersion and a clean top end, so surrounds and fronts share one voice.
The Numbers, and What They Ask of You
GoldenEar quotes 90 Hz to 25 kHz typical, with the bass at minus 6 dB at 180 Hz anechoic. Sensitivity is 91 dB at 2.83 volts into a 4 ohm nominal load, and recommended amplification is 20 to 200 watts. A subwoofer is part of the design, not an option.
How Little Room It Takes
Each speaker is 12.6 inches tall, 4.75 wide and 2.8 deep, and weighs 5 pounds. Turned on its side it becomes a low center-channel shape, though GoldenEar also makes a dedicated horizontal 3C version with an angled foot.
Who Is This Bookshelf Speaker Best For?
- You want speakers that vanish — under three inches deep and five pounds, it hangs on a wall like a picture frame or sits on the included stand
- You are building a surround system in stages — sold individually, so you can add one surround speaker at a time and end with a set that matches itself
- You want a real tweeter in a satellite — the folded ribbon is the same type GoldenEar uses in its towers, not a small dome
- Your amplifier is an ordinary receiver — 91 dB sensitivity means any of our AV receivers will drive a full set, as long as it is happy with 4 ohms
- Plan on a subwoofer — 180 Hz at minus 6 dB is a satellite's floor; GoldenEar crosses the SuperSat 3 to a subwoofer at 120 Hz, and so should you
How Does It Connect to Your System?
Speaker cable runs from your receiver to a single pair of binding posts on the back of each speaker. It is passive, so there is nothing else to power or configure. Buy two for stereo, or five for surround.
On a shelf, screw the included table stand to the keyhole. On a wall, use the keyhole or the threaded insert with a SuperSwivel bracket, and use a safety strap. Set your receiver's crossover for these channels to 120 Hz.
Pairs Well With
What finishes the setup. These are the categories most SuperSat 3 owners shop next.
- GoldenEar ForceField 30 subwoofer — the compact 8-inch sub that carries everything below 120 Hz
- GoldenEar Super Swivel wall mounts — the pivoting brackets made for the threaded insert on the back
- AV receivers — 20 to 200 watts, rated into 4 ohms
- Speaker cables — more runs than usual in a surround set, so buy accordingly
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this one speaker or a pair?
One speaker. Order two for stereo, or as many as your surround layout calls for. We list it this way because GoldenEar ships it one to a box.
Can I use it as a center channel?
Laid on its side, yes. GoldenEar also makes the SuperSat 3C, a horizontal version with an adjustable angling foot, for a dedicated center.
Do I need a subwoofer?
Yes. The SuperSat 3 reaches 180 Hz at minus 6 dB, so all of the bass belongs to a subwoofer. GoldenEar's own systems cross it over at 120 Hz.
How much amplifier does it need?
GoldenEar rates it for 20 to 200 watts at 91 dB sensitivity into 4 ohms. Any AV receiver will drive a set; check that yours is rated for 4 ohm speakers.
What comes in the box?
One speaker, one table stand with its square-neck insert and screw, and the manual. Wall brackets and floor stands are sold separately.
How does it differ from the Aon 3?
The Aon 3 is a full bookshelf speaker with a 7-inch driver and side radiators that reaches into the 40s on its own. The SuperSat 3 is a wall-thin satellite that needs a subwoofer, in exchange for disappearing into the room.
