GoldenEar's Flagship Tower, Now Bi-Wire Capable
The GoldenEar T66 is the flagship of GoldenEar's T Series: a hybrid tower with a High-Gauss Reference HVFR folded-ribbon tweeter and two 4.5-inch cast-basket mid/bass drivers on top, paired with a self-powered bass section built around two long-throw quadratic subwoofers and two planar back-wave-driven passive radiators, driven by a 1000-watt peak (500-watt RMS) DSP-controlled amplifier.
GoldenEar rates sensitivity at 91 dB into a nominal 4 ohms (compatible with 8-ohm-rated amplifiers), and recommends 20 to 500 watts of amplifier power for the passive section. Stereophile's own bench measurement corroborated the sensitivity figure almost exactly.
The tall, slender cabinet is finished in Gloss Black and sold each, so a stereo pair is two. Two pairs of binding posts make the T66 bi-wire capable out of the box, with removable jumpers included for single-wiring instead.
Where the Second Powered Subwoofer Earns Its Keep
Two Powered Subwoofers, and a Bi-Wire First
Two long-throw quadratic subwoofers and two planar back-wave-driven passive radiators handle the bass load, driven by GoldenEar's own 1000-watt peak (500-watt RMS) DSP-controlled amplifier — rated under a sustained-tone test rather than the FTC's continuous-power standard. Independent bench testing puts the mid/bass-to-subwoofer crossover around 128 Hz, adjustable via a rear-panel level control.
The HVFR tweeter and two 4.5-inch cast-basket mid/bass drivers cross over to the tweeter just above 3 kHz. Two pairs of binding posts — one for the bass amplifier, one for the tweeter and mid/bass drivers — ship with removable jumpers installed for single-wire use, a first for a GoldenEar tower.
The Numbers, and What They Ask of Your Amplifier
GoldenEar publishes a single frequency-response figure for the T66: 29 Hz to 25 kHz typical, with anechoic bass response reaching to 29 Hz at -6 dB. Sensitivity is 91 dB, nominal impedance is 4 ohms (compatible with 8-ohm-rated amplifiers), and GoldenEar recommends 20 to 500 watts of amplifier power for the passive section.
Each speaker's built-in bass amplifier carries a 1200-watt nameplate rating on a standard 120V circuit — well under a single outlet's 1800-watt limit, but worth spreading a stereo pair across two circuits if other gear shares the same one.
What Reviewers Are Saying
The T66 has picked up an unusual run of honors: a Stereophile Recommended Component for 2025, The Absolute Sound's 2024 Golden Ear Award, and Reviewers' Choice from SoundStage!.
John Atkinson, in Stereophile's official listing, wrote that the T66 "sounded like a more dynamic, clearer, cleaner-sounding cousin of GoldenEar's BRX standmount, with considerably more powerful and extended low frequencies and more top-octave air."
Drew Kalbach, The Absolute Sound, called it "a wonderful addition to the GoldenEar product line" and, since it negates the need for a separate subwoofer, "an easy recommendation."
Who Is This Floorstanding Speaker Best For?
- You want GoldenEar's most decorated tower — a Stereophile Recommended Component, The Absolute Sound's Golden Ear Award, and SoundStage!'s Reviewers' Choice all landed on the T66
- You want two powered subwoofers built into the towers themselves — a 1000-watt peak DSP-controlled bass amplifier means no separate subwoofer box for most rooms
- Bi-wiring matters to you — the T66 is the first bi-wire-capable GoldenEar tower, with jumpers included if you'd rather run single-wire
- You want one speaker per cabinet, priced and shipped that way — the T66 is sold each, so order two for a stereo pair
- You don't need a separate subwoofer even in a demanding room — the built-in powered bass reaches to 29 Hz at -6 dB on its own. For the deepest home-theater effects beyond that, add one of our subwoofers and let the towers do what they do best
How Does It Connect to Your System?
Set the cabinet on the included steel spikes or rubber tips, adjusting them with the supplied hook spanner and hex key. Each cabinet has two pairs of binding posts — leave the included jumpers in place for single-wiring, or remove them to bi-wire.
Give the passive drivers a few hours of playback to loosen up; the powered bass section is ready to go from the first listen.
Two cables, two power cords, two speakers, and you are listening.
Pairs Well With
What finishes the system around a pair of T66 towers:
- Integrated amplifiers — 20 to 500 watts into 4 ohms is the window GoldenEar gives
- Stereo amplifiers — a separate power amp if you want more headroom for the passive section
- Speaker cables — the T66 is bi-wire capable out of the box, so a bi-wire run is an option here
- Power conditioners — each speaker's bass amplifier draws its own AC power, worth conditioning like any other powered component
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the price for one speaker or a pair?
One. The T66 is sold each, so order two for a stereo pair, or combine it with other GoldenEar T Series models for a matched home theater system.
Do I need a separate subwoofer?
For most rooms, no — each T66 has its own powered subwoofer built in, reaching to 29 Hz at -6 dB. Each speaker's bass amplifier plugs into AC power, so plan placement near an outlet.
What amplifier do I need?
GoldenEar recommends 20 to 500 watts into 4 ohms (compatible with 8-ohm-rated amplifiers) for the passive section. Because the built-in amplifier handles the bass, your amplifier only drives the midrange and tweeter.
Can I bi-wire the T66?
Yes. Two pairs of binding posts ship with removable jumpers installed; take the jumpers out to bi-wire, or leave them in to run single-wire.
Can I plug a stereo pair into the same outlet?
Each speaker's bass amplifier carries a 1200-watt nameplate rating; a pair combined (2,400 watts) exceeds a single standard 15-amp, 120V circuit's 1,800-watt capacity, so plan for two circuits if other gear shares the same one.
What finish is available?
Gloss Black.
