What Is This, and Why Do You Need It?

The stylus is the diamond tip at the end of your cartridge’s cantilever — the tiny needle that actually touches your record and reads the groove. Over time and use, that diamond wears down. A worn stylus doesn’t just sound worse; it can damage your records, cutting into the groove walls and causing permanent harm to your vinyl collection.

The Grado Prestige Green4 Stylus is the official replacement stylus for the Green4 cartridge — and all earlier Grado Prestige Green-series cartridges. It’s a genuine Grado part, made in Brooklyn, New York. When you replace the stylus, your cartridge performs like new without having to buy a whole new cartridge body.

How the Replacement Works

One of the best things about Grado Prestige Series cartridges is the user-replaceable stylus system. You don’t need tools, a technician, or a trip to a dealer. The stylus simply pulls off the front of the cartridge body and snaps back on. Most people can do it in under a minute. This is by design — Grado built the Prestige Series to be maintained at home, easily and affordably.

Prestige Series Styli Are Cross-Compatible

Here’s something worth knowing: all Grado Prestige Series styli are interchangeable across cartridge bodies in the Prestige line. This means the Green4 stylus fits not just the Green4 body, but also the Red4, and other Prestige-series bodies. This cross-compatibility also opens an upgrade path — you can fit a higher-level Prestige stylus onto your existing cartridge body to step up your performance without replacing the whole unit.

What You’re Getting — Bonded Elliptical Diamond

The Green4 stylus uses a bonded elliptical diamond mounted on an aluminum cantilever. An elliptical diamond shape makes better contact with the groove walls than a basic spherical tip. This means it tracks more accurately, retrieves more musical detail, and is gentler on your records at the same tracking force. “Bonded” means the diamond is fixed to the cantilever tip with an adhesive bond — a reliable, cost-effective construction used throughout the Prestige Series.

When Should You Replace Your Stylus?

As a general rule, a stylus lasts around 500–1,000 hours of play time under normal conditions. But audible wear can happen gradually, making it hard to notice without a reference point. Signs it’s time to replace include: a harsh or distorted high end, loss of stereo separation, the stylus skipping on clean records, or simply knowing you’ve put significant hours on your current stylus. When in doubt, a fresh stylus is almost always an improvement — and far cheaper than replacing records damaged by a worn tip.
