The iFi ZEN Air DAC 2 is a desktop DAC and headphone amp. Let's break that down. That balanced circuit also brings a lot more power. iFi says the ZEN Air DAC 2 delivers up to three times the headphone drive of the model before it, with up to 484mW RMS from the balanced output. In plain terms, that's enough muscle to properly drive a wider range of headphones—including bigger, harder-to-power ones—so they sound controlled and full instead of weak.

It also has two handy buttons on the front, both from iFi's well-known toolkit:

XBass+ adds a boost to the low frequencies for more energy and weight—great for bringing back the bass that open-back headphones sometimes lose. PowerMatch adds extra gain (about 6dB) to help wake up hard-to-drive headphones. iFi notes both work in the analog domain, not as digital processing.

The ZEN Air DAC 2 plays hi-res music too—PCM files up to 384kHz and DSD256, which are high-resolution formats that hold more detail than a normal streaming file. And iFi gave it a more premium look this time: a midnight blue finish with a metal front panel, plus a dedicated power button (added because customers asked for it) so you can switch it off without reaching behind your desk.
