A Big Upgrade for iFi's Entry-Level Phono Stage

The iFi Audio ZEN Phono 3 is an MM/MC phono stage and the newest version of iFi's compact ZEN Phono line. It skips straight from the original ZEN Phono to "3." New additions include a subsonic filter, a front-panel gain switch, and a 4.4mm balanced output, none of which the first-generation model had.

It's a different product from the ZEN Air Phono, a separate, simpler model in iFi's lineup that trims back features for a lower price. The ZEN Phono 3 sits above it, with more gain settings and finer control over loading.

iFi builds the whole circuit into a compact half-width aluminum case. The clean power supply runs on its own isolated board, which keeps electrical noise away from the phono stage where it would be amplified along with the music.

Four Gain Modes and a Smarter Subsonic Filter

Gain switches across four modes. They run 36dB for moving magnet, 48dB for high-output moving coil, 60dB for low output and 72dB for very low output. Each mode brings its own loading. MM and MC High use a fixed 47 kOhms. MC Low and MC V-Low switch between 1k, 400 and 100 ohms.

Capacitance loading switches between 100pF and 200pF on the MM and MC High modes. Distortion stays below 0.0027% in MM mode, rising to a still-low 0.031% in MC Low mode.

iFi rates the noise floor at -151dBV equivalent input noise. Signal-to-noise ratio reaches as high as 91dB(A) weighted in MM mode. RIAA accuracy is rated within ±0.15dB across the audible range.

The intelligent subsonic filter tells real bass from warp noise. It does this by treating up-and-down and side-to-side groove motion differently, because musical bass on a record is mono anyway. That lets it filter out rumble from a warped LP without dulling genuine low end.

It measures 158 by 115 by 35mm and weighs 456 grams. Power comes from an included 5V DC adapter, rated at half an amp, so the transformer stays out of the box.

Ed Selley reviewed the ZEN Phono 3 for AVForums in June 2024, calling it a phono stage that "sounds ridiculous for £250." He found "the performance of the Phono 3 with moving magnet carts is so absurdly good." In his view, many listeners wouldn't need to upgrade to a moving coil cartridge at all.

He also praised its noise performance directly, describing it as "still a supernaturally quiet phono stage" even next to pricier competition.

Chris Kelly reviewed it for The Ear in April 2025. He wrote that "the tiny Zen Phono 3 was punching so far above its weight that if it was an actual fight the referee would have stepped in." He also noted "my ear was greeted with inky black silence" when listening right next to the drive units.

Kelly added that acoustic passages came through "with just the right weight, delicacy and musicality." It was a result he didn't expect from a phono stage at this price.
