A Dongle DAC Forged Like a Blade
Kensei means "sword saint" in Japanese, a title reserved for masters. iFi chose the name deliberately: the GO bar Kensei is the flagship of its GO bar line, an ultraportable USB DAC and headphone amplifier machined from Japanese stainless steel, small enough to ride between your phone and your headphones yet powerful enough to replace a desktop setup.
Inside, a 32-bit Cirrus Logic DAC handles PCM up to 384kHz, DSD256, DXD, and full MQA decoding. The balanced 4.4mm output delivers up to 477mW, with 300mW from the 3.5mm output, real power for full-size headphones, not just earbuds. A Turbo mode adds 6dB of gain for demanding loads, while iEMatch pulls the noise floor down for sensitive in-ear monitors. There's no battery to charge: it draws power from your phone, tablet, or computer over USB-C.
The stainless steel body isn't just for looks. It adds electromagnetic shielding over the standard GO bar's aluminum, part of a package of upgrades that also includes enhanced power and clock circuitry.
K2HD: Mastering-Studio Technology in Your Pocket
The Kensei is the first portable DAC with K2HD, a technology developed by JVCKenwood and used in Japanese mastering studios. K2HD upscales a file to 24-bit/192kHz and applies waveform correction to restore the natural harmonics that digital recording strips away. Louis Gonzalez of Headfonics described the result as "an assimilated analog-like presentation" that makes recordings sound "closer to the original."
Four digital filters (Bit-Perfect, GTO, Minimum Phase, and Standard) let you fine-tune the conversion, and iFi's XBass+ and XSpace circuits add analog bass reinforcement and soundstage width when a recording needs them, all switchable from buttons on the unit.
What Reviewers Are Saying
Louis Gonzalez of Headfonics scored the Kensei 8.2 out of 10 in a June 22, 2024 review, noting it "produces sound with a completely dark background" and delivers "a lot of micro detail." Tshaka Armstrong of iMore, in a September 25, 2024 review, called it "one of the best mobile DACs you can buy," writing that it's "transparent without being harsh or overly smooth" and lets you "enjoy every nuance of a stereo image."
Who Is This DAC/Amp Best For?
- You want flagship sound from your phone or laptop — this is iFi's best dongle DAC, with power and detail that rival desktop gear.
- You own headphones with 4.4mm balanced cables — the 477mW balanced output is unusual in something this small.
- You switch between IEMs and full-size headphones — Turbo gain and iEMatch cover both extremes cleanly.
- You want to hear K2HD — no other portable offers this JVCKenwood mastering technology.
- If you just need a basic dongle for casual listening, the Kensei is overkill — iFi's standard GO bar or a simple adapter costs far less.
How Does It Connect to Your System?
Plug the included USB-C cable into your phone, tablet, or computer, and plug your headphones into the 4.4mm balanced or 3.5mm output. That's the whole setup: no battery, no charging, no pairing. A Lightning cable is available for older iPhones, and the unit works with USB-C iPhones, Android devices, Macs, and PCs.
Status LEDs show format and sample rate at a glance, and all features, filters, XBass+, XSpace, Turbo, and iEMatch, are controlled from buttons on the unit itself, with no app required.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes the Kensei different from the standard GO bar?
A Japanese stainless steel body with better shielding, upgraded power and clock circuitry, and K2HD processing, which the standard GO bar doesn't have.
Does it have a battery?
No. It draws power from your phone, tablet, or computer over USB-C, so there's nothing to charge.
How powerful is it?
Up to 477mW from the 4.4mm balanced output and 300mW from the 3.5mm output, plus a Turbo mode that adds 6dB of gain.
Will it work with sensitive IEMs?
Yes. The built-in iEMatch circuit lowers the noise floor and output level for sensitive in-ears.
What formats does it support?
PCM up to 32-bit/384kHz, DSD256, DXD, and full MQA decoding.
What's the warranty?
iFi covers the GO bar Kensei with a 1-year manufacturer's warranty.
