Most portable DACs give something up to fit in a pocket. The iFi iDSD Diablo 2 does not. This is iFi's flagship portable DAC and headphone amp. It gives up to 5,180mW from the balanced output. That will drive full-size planars and high-impedance cans that would beat most desk amps, from a box the size of a paperback.

Inside, two Burr-Brown DAC chips run side by side. They take PCM up to 32-bit and 768kHz. DSD512 is covered, and so is full MQA decoding, so nothing in a modern library is shut out.

Three gain modes scale the power to your headphones: Normal at 0dB, Turbo at +8dB, Nitro at +16dB. An IEMatch circuit tames the output for sensitive in-ears. So one unit suits everything from IEMs to 600-ohm studio cans.

A 4800mAh battery runs for six to twelve hours. How long depends on the volume you use, and on the gain mode you choose. The whole package weighs about a pound.

Lossless Bluetooth and a Look at the Future

The Diablo 2 is one of the first high-end DACs built around Bluetooth 5.4 with aptX Lossless. That codec sends true CD-quality audio without a wire. aptX Adaptive, LDAC, HWA/LHDC, AAC and SBC are all covered too, so any phone will pair. Stream in lossless, then plug in over USB-C for full hi-res.

It is ready for what comes next. Bias, EQ and amplifier circuits are all in place for xMEMS solid-state drivers, a new headphone technology. That makes the Diablo 2 unusually future-proof for a portable.

How Does It Connect to Your System?

Wired sources connect over USB-C or coaxial/optical S/PDIF, and a balanced 4.4mm analog input lets it serve as a pure amplifier. Headphones plug into a balanced 4.4mm or single-ended 6.35mm output, and a balanced line output can feed an amplifier or powered speakers. For wireless listening, pair your phone or laptop over Bluetooth.
