Kimber Kable 4PR: A Braided Copper Speaker Cable With VariStrand Conductors
Kimber Kable calls 4PR a high current braided loudspeaker cable in its Base Series. Kimber lists eight strands of 19.5 AWG OFE (oxygen free electrolytic) copper. Four strands combine to about 13 AWG per +/- leg. Kimber terminates every one of its cables. It lists "Nitrogen assisted hand soldered termination" as a feature of 4PR.
Other length & termination options are available. Call us to discuss your needs.
What Goes Into the Braid, and What Does Kimber Measure?
Kimber rates the OFE copper at 102% IACS. Its features include VariStrand copper conductors and an 8 wire counter opposed helix. The dielectric is polyethylene, and the colors are black and red. Kimber prints two measured values, both per meter: 127 pF of parallel capacitance and a dc loop resistance of 0.016 Ohm.
Which Connector Will You Get: Spade, Banana, or Bare Wire?
Each listing's title names the connector on each end. Kimber's standard spade is a 1/4-inch silver spade it calls SPADE. Its silver banana is S-BAN. Kimber says its nickel plated beryllium copper spring provides consistent pressure with high electrical conductivity. Bare Wire to Bare Wire means no connectors.
What Reviewers Are Saying
England's hi-fi+ honored 4PR with an Editor's Choice Award for 2024. In April 2024 it wrote of 4PR and 8PR, "They offer a combination of energy, dynamism, and refinement, making them a popular choice among audiophiles building their first system."
Richard Black reviewed 4PR for TechRadar on July 19, 2011. He wrote, "4PR impressed us in a very positive way with its combination of detail, bass extension, and sweetness."
Gene DellaSala, writing for Audioholics on May 19, 2009, said, "The Kimber 4PR and 8PR, although pricey, probably offers some of the highest quality-to-value ratios I've seen in exotic cables."
Who Is This Speaker Cable Best For?
- You want a cable terminated by its maker — Kimber terminates every one
- You are building a first serious system — hi-fi+ calls 4PR and 8PR a popular choice for first systems
- You want published measurements — Kimber prints capacitance and loop resistance
- You want to choose your own connectors — listings come with spades, bananas or bare wire on either end
- Your speakers need a bi-wire cable — none of the 4PR listings is bi-wire, so look for a bi-wire listing instead
How Does It Connect to Your System?
Connect one end to your amplifier's speaker outputs and the other to your speaker's binding posts, red to red and black to black. Do the same for the second speaker.
The Measuring Mistake That Leaves You Inches Short
Measure the path the cable will really take, around furniture and along the baseboard. Then add a little slack. As Cardas puts it, "A cable that's just long enough usually turns out to be just not long enough." Keep both runs the same length, as Cardas recommends.
Which Connector Holds Up Best Over the Years?
Spades clamp under a binding post and hold tight. Bananas push straight in, so they connect fastest. Bare wire fits almost anything, but we suggest avoiding it. Bare copper oxidizes quickly, and Cardas notes that copper oxide is not a good conductor. If you use bare wire, re-strip the ends when the copper darkens.
When Is It Time to Upgrade?
Speaker cable often stays put for years. Look again when something else changes. Moving from bookshelf speakers to floorstanders is the big one. In our experience, about nine in ten people who make that move keep their old speaker cable. A stronger amplifier, a longer run, or darkened ends are the other signs.
Pairs Well With
These are the categories on either end of a speaker cable.
- Floorstanding Speakers — the best time to rethink your speaker cable
- Bookshelf Speakers — the speaker end in a smaller room
- Integrated Amplifiers — the amplifier end in most stereo systems
- Stereo Amplifiers — the amplifier end when you run separates
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it covered by a warranty?
Kimber offers a lifetime warranty on all its factory-terminated cables, with proof of purchase from an authorized dealer. Audio Advisor is an authorized Kimber dealer.
What do pair and single mean?
Kimber says: "A pair of speaker cables goes from an amplifier to a pair of speakers. A single speaker cable goes from an amplifier to a single speaker."
What gauge is 4PR?
Kimber lists four 19.5 AWG strands, combined to about 13 AWG, per +/- leg.
What are the SPADE and S-BAN connectors?
SPADE is Kimber's standard 1/4-inch silver spade. S-BAN is its silver banana.
What is the dielectric, and what colors does 4PR come in?
Kimber lists a polyethylene dielectric in black and red.
