Kimber Kable 4TC Braided Speaker Cable
Kimber Kable 4TC is a high current braided loudspeaker cable from Kimber's Ascent Series. Each side of the pair combines four strands of 19.5 AWG oxygen free electrolytic (OFE) copper, which Kimber puts at about 13 AWG per leg, wrapped in Teflon insulation.
Kimber has handcrafted cables since 1979, and Kimber terminates all of its cables. The 4TC page lists nitrogen assisted hand soldered termination as a feature. Each listing's title names the connector on each end, whether spade, banana or bare wire.
Other length & termination options are available. Call us to discuss your needs.
What Is Inside the Braid?
Kimber describes 4TC as an eight wire counter opposed helix of VariStrand copper conductors, with Teflon insulation and a low loss fluorocarbon dielectric. It prints three measured values, each per meter: 136 pF parallel capacitance, 0.225 uH series inductance and 0.016 ohm dc loop resistance.
Which Connectors Does Kimber Fit?
Kimber's standard spade is its silver SPADE, a 1/4-inch connector. Its silver banana is the S-BAN, which uses a nickel plated beryllium copper spring for consistent pressure. Kimber says it solders with high silver content solder under a protective nitrogen gas curtain.
What Reviewers Are Saying
Hi-Fi News gave 4TC "Highly Commended" status in January 2013: "Kimber may have changed the color of this cable's insulation, but the inherently 'likeable' sound we identified in blind listening tests some 20 years ago is just as evident today".
Anthony Nicosia reviewed 4TC for HighFidelityReview on July 3, 2009, using Kimber Hero interconnects. He heard "the 4TC’s opened that stage a little to the left and the right plus adding a sense of further height to the performance".
Who Is This Speaker Cable Best For?
- You want a braided 13 AWG cable — 4TC combines four 19.5 AWG strands per leg for about 13 AWG
- You want measured numbers to compare — Kimber prints capacitance, inductance and loop resistance
- You want a cable made by its maker — Kimber terminates every cable, with nitrogen assisted hand soldering
- You want a cable with a track record — Hi-Fi News gave 4TC its Highly Commended status in 2013
- Your speakers have two pairs of binding posts — none of these listings is a bi-wire cable, so keep your speaker's links in place or fit jumpers
How Does It Connect to Your System?
Connect one end to your amplifier's speaker outputs and the other to your speaker's binding posts, red to red and black to black. Do the same for the second speaker.
The Measuring Mistake That Leaves You Inches Short
Speaker cable is cut for one room. Measure the path the cable will really take, around furniture and along the baseboard. Then add a little slack. As Cardas puts it, "A cable that's just long enough usually turns out to be just not long enough." Keep the left and right runs the same length, as Cardas recommends, even when one speaker sits closer.
Which Connector Holds Up Best Over the Years?
Spades clamp under a binding post and hold tight. Bananas push straight in, so they connect fastest. Bare wire fits almost anything, but we suggest avoiding it. Bare copper oxidizes quickly, and Cardas notes that copper oxide is not a good conductor. If you use bare wire, re-strip the ends when the copper darkens.
Tighten the connections, power up, and play something you know well.
When Is It Time to Upgrade?
Speaker cable often stays put for years, so it tends to be the last thing upgraded. Look again when something else changes. Moving from bookshelf speakers to floorstanders is the big one. In our experience, about nine in ten people who make that move keep their old speaker cable. A stronger amplifier or darkened ends are the other signs.
Pairs Well With
A speaker cable joins your amplifier to your speakers. These are the categories on either end of it.
- Floorstanding Speakers — the best time to rethink your speaker cable
- Bookshelf Speakers — the speaker end in a smaller room
- Integrated Amplifiers — the amplifier end in most stereo systems
- Stereo Amplifiers — the amplifier end when you run separates
Frequently Asked Questions
Who terminates this cable?
Kimber does. Kimber terminates all of its cables, and its 4TC page lists nitrogen assisted hand soldered termination as a feature.
What gauge is 4TC?
Kimber describes 4TC as eight strands of 19.5 AWG OFE copper, four per leg, for about 13 AWG per leg.
What does pair or single mean in a listing?
Kimber defines it this way: "A pair of speaker cables goes from an amplifier to a pair of speakers. A single speaker cable goes from an amplifier to a single speaker."
Which connectors can I choose?
Each listing's title names Kimber's silver 1/4-inch spades (SPADE), its silver banana (S-BAN), or bare wire with no connector.
Is there a warranty?
Yes. Kimber offers a lifetime warranty on all its factory-terminated cables with proof of purchase from an authorized dealer. Audio Advisor is an authorized Kimber dealer.
