AGDL Brings Kimber's Silver Braid to Digital Audio
Kimber Kable's AGDL is a digital cable built from three hyper-pure silver conductors in Kimber's tri-braid geometry. Kimber configures it for balanced digital data and offers it with studio-grade XLR plugs or its Ultraplate RCA. This is the RCA version, for the coaxial socket on most sources and DACs.
Three Hyper-Pure Silver VariStrand Conductors
Kimber lists three conductors of what it calls hyper-pure silver, built with its VariStrand design and woven in its proven tri-braid field geometry. Kimber says AGDL "offers accurate, detailed and dynamic performance." It sits in Kimber's Specialty Series with the slogan "Push Every Bit."
Kimber publishes the electrical figures. AGDL measures 37.1 picofarads of parallel capacitance, 1.05 microhenries of series inductance and 0.119 ohms of DC resistance per meter. Kimber does not publish a dielectric material for AGDL, so this page does not claim one.
A Braid, Not a Transmission Line
Kimber says the AGDL "design philosophy is not transmission line based nor does it use metallic or semi-conductive screens." It is configured for balanced digital data transmission. That is a different approach from a shielded coaxial cable, and Kimber quotes no 75-ohm impedance for it.
The RCA Plugs, Explained
This AGDL ends in an RCA plug at each end. RCA is the single-pin plug on the coaxial digital output of most CD players, streamers and DACs. Kimber lists its Ultraplate RCA for AGDL, with a WBT 0114 Ag option. The Ultraplate is machined from solid metal with a solid Teflon dielectric and a split center pin.
Who Is This Digital Cable Best For?
- You want silver conductors on a digital link — AGDL's three conductors are hyper-pure silver, so the whole signal path is silver
- You already run Kimber braids — the tri-braid field geometry is the same idea as Kimber's analog interconnects, so the digital link matches the rest
- Your CD player or streamer has a coaxial output — the RCA plugs fit the orange coax socket on most sources and DACs, so no adapter is needed
- You want the numbers — Kimber publishes capacitance, inductance and resistance per meter, so you can compare it on paper as well as by ear
- Your gear has BNC or AES/EBU sockets — an RCA plug will not fit them. Choose the Kimber AGDL AES/EBU XLR instead, or call us and we will match the plug
How Does It Connect to Your System?
Plug one end into the coaxial digital output of your CD player, transport or streamer and the other into the coaxial digital input of your DAC or receiver. Then choose that input on the DAC and let it lock to the signal.
Then listen. Other and longer lengths available. Call for prices.
Pairs Well With
A digital cable is one link in a digital chain. It usually joins these categories.
- Digital-to-Analog Converters — the receiving end of the link
- CD Players and Transports — the classic coaxial source
- Music Streamers — a streamer with a digital output
- Power Cables — clean power at both ends
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Kimber call it balanced when it has RCA plugs?
Kimber configures AGDL for balanced digital data and offers it with studio-grade XLR plugs or its Ultraplate RCA. The RCA version is the same three-conductor braid with single-ended plugs, and Kimber quotes no 75-ohm impedance for it.
What does 'not transmission line based' mean?
Kimber's own description. It says the AGDL design philosophy does not rely on a set characteristic impedance and does not use metallic or semi-conductive screens, relying instead on its tri-braid field geometry.
Does Kimber publish measurements?
Yes. Kimber lists 37.1 picofarads of parallel capacitance, 1.05 microhenries of series inductance and 0.119 ohms of DC resistance per meter for AGDL.
What is S/PDIF?
The Sony/Philips Digital Interface, the standard behind the coaxial and optical digital sockets on consumer audio gear. Over coax it runs on a 75-ohm line with RCA or BNC plugs and carries stereo PCM and encoded surround.
Is there a step up?
Kimber TGDL Silver Digital is the step up. Kimber says it should be auditioned if you are using the very best equipment, and it doubles the conductor count to six.
