AGDL Is Kimber's Silver Braid for AES/EBU Digital
Kimber Kable's AGDL is a balanced digital cable built from three hyper-pure silver conductors in Kimber's tri-braid geometry. Kimber configures it for balanced digital data transmission and fits studio-grade XLR plugs with silver-plated contacts. This is the AES/EBU version for balanced digital gear.
Three Hyper-Pure Silver VariStrand Conductors
Kimber lists three conductors of what it calls hyper-pure silver, built with its VariStrand design and woven in its proven tri-braid field geometry. Kimber says AGDL "offers accurate, detailed and dynamic performance." It sits in Kimber's Specialty Series with the slogan "Push Every Bit."
Kimber publishes the electrical figures. AGDL measures 37.1 picofarads of parallel capacitance, 1.05 microhenries of series inductance and 0.119 ohms of DC resistance per meter. Kimber does not publish a dielectric material for AGDL, so this page does not claim one.
A Braid, Not a Transmission Line
Kimber says the AGDL "design philosophy is not transmission line based nor does it use metallic or semi-conductive screens." It is configured for balanced digital data transmission. That is a different approach from a shielded coaxial cable, and Kimber quotes no 75-ohm impedance for it.
The XLR Plugs, Explained
Despite the word coaxial in the listing title, this AGDL is an AES/EBU balanced digital cable with a three-pin XLR plug at each end, one male and one female. Kimber fits "studio grade" XLR connectors with silver-plated contacts. It does not name the plug's maker, so we do not claim it.
Who Is This Digital Cable Best For?
- Your DAC and transport have AES/EBU sockets — the XLR plugs fit them directly and latch, so the link will not work loose
- You want silver conductors on a digital link — AGDL's three conductors are hyper-pure silver, and the XLR contacts are silver-plated, so the signal path is silver to the pin
- You run a balanced digital chain — Kimber configures AGDL for balanced digital data, which is the AES/EBU standard
- You want the numbers — Kimber publishes capacitance, inductance and resistance per meter, so you can compare it on paper as well as by ear
- Your DAC has only a coaxial RCA or BNC input — this XLR cable will not fit it, and it is not a 75-ohm coax cable. Choose the Kimber AGDL RCA to RCA instead, or call us and we will match the plug
How Does It Connect to Your System?
Plug the male XLR into the AES/EBU input of your DAC and the female XLR into the AES/EBU output of your transport or streamer. The plug latches, so press the tab to remove it. Then choose that input.
Then listen. Other and longer lengths available. Call for prices.
Pairs Well With
A digital cable is one link in a digital chain. It usually joins these categories.
- Digital-to-Analog Converters — the receiving end of the link
- CD Players and Transports — the classic coaxial source
- Music Streamers — a streamer with a digital output
- Power Cables — clean power at both ends
Frequently Asked Questions
What is AES/EBU?
The professional balanced digital standard. It runs on a 110-ohm twisted pair with XLR plugs and carries the same stereo PCM data as S/PDIF over a link that rejects noise the way a balanced analog cable does.
What does 'not transmission line based' mean?
Kimber's own description. It says the AGDL design philosophy does not rely on a set characteristic impedance and does not use metallic or semi-conductive screens, relying instead on its tri-braid field geometry.
Does Kimber publish measurements?
Yes. Kimber lists 37.1 picofarads of parallel capacitance, 1.05 microhenries of series inductance and 0.119 ohms of DC resistance per meter for AGDL.
Which XLR plug is fitted?
Kimber fits what it calls studio grade XLR connectors with silver-plated contacts, one male and one female. It does not name the plug's maker, so we do not claim it. The plug latches like any XLR.
Is there a step up?
Kimber Orchid AES/EBU is the top of Kimber's AES/EBU range. Kimber calls it a cable of exceptional achievement with proprietary technology.
