D-60 Is Kimber's Pure Silver 75-Ohm Digital Cable

Kimber Kable's D-60 is, in Kimber's words, a "precision 75Ω pure silver digital tri-axial" cable for S/PDIF. It sits in Kimber's Summit Series. The center conductor is silver, the dielectric is air-articulated fluorocarbon, and two helically wound shields surround it.

Kimber lists the conductor type as silver and the dielectric as a low-loss, air-articulated fluorocarbon. Air stores less of the signal's energy than a solid plastic, and the fluorocarbon tape holds the conductor centered. Kimber's slogan for its digital line is "Push Every Bit."

Kimber publishes the electrical figures. The D-60 measures 55.2 picofarads of parallel capacitance, 0.502 microhenries of series inductance and 0.115 ohms of DC resistance per meter. Few cable makers print those numbers for a digital cable.

Two Helical Shields and a Nitrogen-Assisted Solder Joint

Two helically wound shields wrap the conductor, one over the other. Each end is hand soldered with nitrogen assistance, a termination method Kimber lists as a feature. Audio Advisor's listings carry the cable's older "Data Flex Studio" name, while Kimber now calls it simply D60.

The RCA Plugs, Explained

This D-60 ends in an RCA plug at each end. RCA is the single-pin plug on the coaxial digital output of most CD players, streamers and DACs. Kimber lists an Ultraplate D-60 RCA as its standard plug, with WBT 0102Ag and 0110Ag options. Kimber's Ultraplate is machined from solid metal with a Teflon dielectric.
