PK14 Ascent Upgrades to Audio Grade Connectors
A power cable carries the last few feet of AC from the wall into a component. It can't add power a component doesn't draw, but a poorly shielded one lets noise ride in on that current.
Kimber's PK14 Ascent keeps the same 14 AWG pure copper conductor as PK14 Base and upgrades the connectors to its WattGate gold evolution Audio Grade series, offered in AU or RH plating.
14 AWG Pure Copper Conductors
Kimber rates the 14 AWG / 2.08mm² pure copper conductors to exceed the typical 15-amp outlet rating, built with the same neutral-colored, virgin dielectric materials Kimber uses across the PK14 line.
WattGate Gold Evolution Audio Grade Connectors
Ascent steps up from the Base series' evolution connectors to Kimber's WattGate gold evolution Audio Grade series, drawn from the WG 330evo, 350evo and 370evo family, in AU (gold) or RH (rhodium) plating options. Kimber's own line copy for Ascent emphasizes better connectors as the defining upgrade over Base.
The Connectors, Explained
PK14 Ascent terminates in a WattGate gold evolution Audio Grade IEC connector, in AU or RH plating, which plugs into the inlet on your amplifier, DAC or other component, and a standard NEMA 5-15 three-prong plug for the US wall outlet at the wall end.
Who Is This Power Cable Best For?
- You already own a PK14 Base and want Kimber's better connector series — Ascent keeps the same 14 AWG conductor and upgrades to the Audio Grade WattGate connectors
- Your component draws typical current through a standard 15-amp circuit — the 14 AWG conductor is rated to exceed that draw, unchanged from Base
- You are feeding a DAC, preamp, streamer or disc player — that source-component role suits this gauge, now with better contacts at the connector
- You want a choice of gold or rhodium plating on the connector — PK14 Ascent is offered in both AU and RH options
- Your amplifier or larger component needs more current headroom — Kimber PK10 Ascent carries the same Audio Grade connectors on a heavier 10 AWG conductor
How Does It Connect to Your System?
Plug the WattGate end into the IEC inlet on the back of your amplifier, DAC or other component, and the male end into a wall outlet or power conditioner outlet.
Then power up the system as usual. Other and longer lengths available. Call for prices.
Pairs Well With
A power cable is one link in the chain from the wall to your gear. It usually joins these categories.
- Power Conditioners — filter the whole circuit; the cable feeds the last few feet after it
- Integrated Amplifiers — the high-current load most power cables are built to feed
- Stereo Amplifiers — another high-current destination for the heavier gauges in this range
- Digital-to-Analog Converters — a low-current source component that still benefits from clean, quiet AC
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does shielding matter on an AC cable?
Kimber builds its power cables to keep radio-frequency and electromagnetic noise from riding in on the AC line and reaching sensitive circuits. A ground wire without that shielding can act like an antenna, pulling in exactly the noise a power cable is supposed to keep out.
Do power cables wear out?
Every metal conductor oxidizes over time; it is unavoidable chemistry, not a defect. What varies is the rate. Denser, better-shielded conductors with quality plating oxidize far more slowly, so a well-made cable performs the same way for years instead of drifting.
Will this affect my system's ground safety?
No change to your safety ground. Every cable in this line keeps the full three-conductor path, hot, neutral and ground, exactly as building code requires. What differs from a stock cord is conductor quality and shielding, not the wiring topology.
Is there a step up?
Kimber PK14 Palladian is the next rung, and the top of the PK14 line. Kimber's Summit Series Palladian build is the cable the company calls the finest power cable available.
