The Horn-Loaded Bookshelf, Second Generation

The RP-600M II is the larger of Klipsch's two Reference Premiere bookshelf speakers. A 1-inch titanium tweeter sits in a 90 by 90 degree Tractrix horn above a 6.5-inch Cerametallic woofer. The braced MDF cabinet is just under 16 inches tall, and the speakers are sold as a pair.

The second generation enlarged the horn. Klipsch says the bigger horn widens the soundstage and tightens directivity. The woofer gained aluminum shorting rings and a new motor for lower distortion and more power handling. The rear port uses Klipsch's Tractrix flare to cut turbulence.

Why a Horn Changes the Sound

A horn-loaded tweeter is far more efficient than a bare dome, so the speaker plays loud on little power. The Linear Travel Suspension tweeter is vented behind the diaphragm to reduce standing waves. Its titanium dome is the same type Klipsch uses across the Reference lines.

The Numbers, and What They Ask of You

Klipsch quotes 44 Hz to 25 kHz within 3 dB, 94.5 dB sensitivity and an 8 ohm compatible load. Power handling is 100 watts continuous and 400 peak. Klipsch measures sensitivity in-room rather than anechoically. Erin's Audio Corner measured about 86 dB anechoic, still easy for any amplifier.

How Much Room It Takes

Each cabinet is 7.95 inches wide, 15.75 tall and 13 deep, and weighs 18.1 pounds. Dual aluminum binding posts allow bi-wiring or bi-amping. A magnetic grille and cork pads are included. The finish is ebony or walnut vinyl with a satin-painted baffle.

Erin's Audio Corner reviewed and measured the RP-600M II on May 22, 2022: "One of the more neutral Klipsch speakers I've listened to and the data shows reasonable linearity."

On imaging: "Really good balance of precision of instruments/vocalists in the soundstage while still having good horizontal dispersion." The review noted a treble lift above 8 kHz and suggested about 20 degrees of toe-out, or the grilles, to tame it.

Stereophile lists the RP-600M II in Class B (Restricted LF) of its Recommended Components. It has held that place in every edition since 2024. Herb Reichert's August 2023 follow-up put it plainly: "The new Klipsch is simply more refined-sounding."

How Do They Connect to Your System?

Speaker cable runs from your amplifier to the dual binding posts on each cabinet. Leave the jumpers in place for a single run, or remove them to bi-wire or bi-amp. These are passive speakers, so there is nothing else to power or configure.

Put them on stands with the cork pads, a foot or more from the wall behind the rear port. Angle them slightly away from the seat rather than toward it. Erin's Audio Corner found about 20 degrees of toe-out gave the smoothest balance.
