LAST STYLAST — Not a Cleaner. A Treatment That Changes What Happens in the Groove

STYLAST is a stylus treatment rather than a stylus cleaner, and the distinction is the whole product. A cleaner removes what is on the diamond. This is applied to a clean stylus and stays there, working while the record plays.

LAST's claim for it is specific: STYLAST "dramatically reduces the friction at the stylus/groove interface, resulting in extended stylus life, reduced distortion, increased tracking ability, and reduced record wear." Note the order — the stylus first, the record second.

One thing we cannot tell you: LAST does not publish the chemistry of STYLAST, and we are not going to guess at it. What the company does describe in detail is the mechanism, which is unusual enough to be worth setting out properly.

How It Works

A Microscopic Gas Bearing

LAST describes the mechanism directly. STYLAST "behaves similar to a microscopic gas bearing": as the record plays, it "transforms into a gas at the point of contact, reducing friction and also dissipating heat."

Heat is the part most people never think about. A diamond dragging through a groove at playing weight generates real temperature at the contact point, and LAST's argument is that carrying that heat away is as much of the job as reducing the friction that caused it.

The Two Ways a Stylus Dies

LAST identifies two: physical wear of the stylus contact faces, and deterioration of the suspension. Their position is that STYLAST addresses both — the first through reduced friction at the contact faces, which is where wear shows up as noise and distortion.

It is applied per side. LAST states that STYLAST "is effective through the entire play of one side of an LP record," which sets the rhythm for using it: once, before the side, onto a stylus you have already cleaned.
