The Little Fwend LOW with P8/P10 Mount — Solving the Hole in the Skeletal Plinth

The standard Little Fwend lifter supplied with the mounting platform that makes it work on a Rega P8, P10 or Naia. It is a bundle rather than a different lifter: the same mechanical lift, plus the part that gives it somewhere to sit.

The problem it solves is specific. Those Regas use a skeletal plinth, and there is a circular opening exactly where the lifter's magnetic disc needs to go. Little Fwend's own account is of “countless emails from customers asking how they can get our Low model to work when there is a circular hole just where it needs to be mounted.”

How It Works

A Trigger, a Ramp and a Gel

The lift is entirely mechanical. The arm meets a trigger at the run-out groove, a lift raises the stylus clear, and a fluorocarbon damping gel slows the movement so the arm rises gently. Nothing is powered and nothing is timed.

The mounting platform adds no mechanism of its own. It is a machined aluminum disc, 50 mm across and 4 mm thick, that spans the opening and presents a flat surface for the lifter.

Fitting the Platform

It is friction-fit rather than glued, and it self-orients: Little Fwend note that “when the recessed arc is aligned along the curvature of the platter, the mount will be oriented correctly.” Nothing is drilled and nothing is modified.

The bundle is aimed at the P8, P10 and Naia. Little Fwend add that the platform “will also fit the other Rega models from the P3 and up as the 44mm diameter opening in the arm brace is the same for all of them.”

One thing to be clear about, in Little Fwend's own words: “This is a highly unofficial product and has nothing to do with Rega.” It is a third-party solution to a Rega design, not a Rega accessory.

What It Will Not Work With

Little Fwend states that it works with gimbal, unipivot, dual pivot and string suspension bearings, but not with linear-tracking tonearms. Rega arms are gimbal-bearing designs, so that is not a constraint here — but it rules out moving the lifter to a linear tracker later.

How Do You Install It?

Drop the platform into the opening in the arm brace and turn it until the recessed arc follows the curve of the platter. Put the magnetic disc on the platform, seat the lifter, and set the height with the supplied Allen keys so the trigger meets the arm. Then play a side through to the end and check it.
