One Box, One Pair of Speakers, Nothing Else Required
The MODEL 40n is a class A/B integrated amplifier with a streamer built into the same chassis. It makes 70 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 100 into 4, and comes in black or silver-gold.
Inputs cover almost everything. Three line-level RCA pairs, a moving-magnet phono input, optical, coaxial, HDMI ARC for your television, a rear USB-A port, Ethernet and dual-band Wi-Fi. Bluetooth 5.4 is on board too.
Streaming Without a Separate Box
HEOS handles the network side, which brings Spotify Connect, Tidal, Amazon Music and internet radio. AirPlay 2 works from anything Apple. Files play from a NAS or the USB port at up to 24-bit/192kHz PCM and DSD128.
On the back are two pairs of speaker terminals, a subwoofer output with a selectable low-pass filter, and a power amp direct input for using the MODEL 40n as a power amplifier alone. A quarter-inch headphone jack sits on the front, and a system remote is included.
A Toroidal Transformer and Marantz's Own Amplifier Modules
Marantz builds the power amplifier around HDAM-SA3 modules, its own discrete alternative to off-the-shelf op-amps, and feeds them from a double-shielded toroidal transformer. Source Direct bypasses the bass, treble and balance circuits when you want the signal untouched.
Frequency response runs 5Hz to 100kHz within 3dB. Total harmonic distortion is 0.02% from 20Hz to 20kHz into 8 ohms, and the damping factor is 100 or better. Tone controls give plus or minus 10dB.
What the Phono Stage Measures
Marantz Musical Phono EQ takes moving magnet at 1.6mV into 47 kilohms, handles up to 80mV before it clips, and tracks the RIAA curve within half a decibel. Signal-to-noise is 87dB on phono and 106dB on line inputs.
The subwoofer filter can be set at 40, 60, 80, 100 or 120Hz to suit your speakers. Draw is 220 watts in use and 0.3 watts in standby. The amplifier measures 17.4 by 5.1 by 17 inches and weighs 36 pounds 13 ounces.
What Reviewers Are Saying
Kalman Rubinson reviewed the MODEL 40n for Stereophile on August 5, 2022. Paired with Revel floorstanders, "an impression of rightness emerged from this combination": "tight, clean bass, an open-sounding midrange, and an extended, unstressed treble."
Reviewing it on July 10, 2023, What Hi-Fi? found that "the Model 40n delivers a clear, powerful and spacious sound" that is "big and bold: a presentation that’s appealing right from the beginning," and scored its build a full five stars.
Where the Same Reviewers Wanted More
What Hi-Fi? judged the HEOS app’s layout "not quite as intuitive or as slick" as rival control apps. Rubinson, running a subwoofer, added that "it would be good to have a high-pass filter for the L and R channels."
Who Is This Network Integrated Amplifier Best For?
- You want one box instead of three — amplifier, DAC and streamer share a chassis, so you add speakers and stop.
- Your television needs better sound — HDMI ARC takes the TV feed directly, with auto power-on.
- You plan to add a subwoofer — there is a dedicated output with five crossover settings.
- You play records with a moving-magnet cartridge — the MM stage tracks RIAA within half a decibel.
- You run a moving-coil cartridge — this phono input is moving magnet only. The Marantz MODEL 30 takes both, though it drops the streaming.
How Does It Connect to Your System?
Run Ethernet if you can and Wi-Fi if you cannot, then set the rest up in the HEOS app. Two antennas ship in the box, one for Wi-Fi and one for Bluetooth, and both are worth fitting.
Speakers go to either pair of terminals, which take bare wire, spades or bananas. A turntable goes to phono with its ground lead. The television connects over one HDMI cable to the ARC port.
Then pick a filter setting for your subwoofer and leave it.
Pairs Well With
Building a system around the MODEL 40n? Start here:
- Speakers: 100 watts into 4 ohms suits a real pair — see our Bookshelf Speakers.
- Subwoofer: the output and its filter are already there — see our Subwoofers.
- Turntable: the MM stage saves you a phono box — see our Turntables.
- Cables: two sets of terminals invite two runs — see our Speaker Cables.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much power does the MODEL 40n make?
70 watts per channel into 8 ohms, and 100 watts per channel into 4 ohms.
What resolution files will it play?
Up to 24-bit/192kHz PCM and DSD128, over the network or from the rear USB-A port.
Does it work with a moving-coil cartridge?
Not directly. The built-in stage is moving magnet only, so a moving coil needs an outboard step-up or phono preamp.
Can I connect my television?
Yes, through the HDMI ARC input, which accepts PCM audio and can wake the amplifier when the TV starts playing.
Is there a full-range preamplifier output?
There is a subwoofer output and a power amp direct input, but no full-range pre-out.
What is in the box?
The amplifier, a system remote, two antennas, a power cable and a quick start guide.
