A Masterpiece-Series Electrostatic, Built to Sit Close to the Wall
The MartinLogan Classic ESL 9 is a Masterpiece Series hybrid electrostatic speaker: a 44-inch XStat panel, the largest at this price point, over an opposing pair of 8-inch aluminum-cone woofers — one forward-firing, one rear-firing — in a fully passive cabinet built for close-to-wall placement.
MartinLogan rates sensitivity at 90 dB into a nominal 4 ohms, dipping to a demanding 0.8 ohms at 20 kHz. MartinLogan's own manual recommends 50 to 400 watts from an amplifier that stays composed into that kind of load.
The panel is available in Walnut, Cherry, or Gloss Black, and sold each, so a stereo pair is two, letting you match an existing speaker or start a system from scratch.
Where the Opposing Woofers Earn Their Keep
A 44-Inch Panel Over an Opposing Bass Array
The 44-inch XStat panel, with 405 square inches of radiating surface, is the largest of the three MartinLogan electrostatic hybrids we carry, crossing over at 380 Hz to a fully passive bass section — there is no onboard amplifier driving the woofers.
Two 8-inch aluminum-cone woofers fire in opposite directions, one forward and one to the rear, in MartinLogan's ForceForward arrangement. Canceling out front-wall bass reflections this way is what lets the Classic ESL 9 sit as close as 8 inches from the wall behind it — far closer than a typical electrostatic speaker needs.
The Numbers, and What They Ask of Your Amplifier
MartinLogan quotes a frequency range of 34 Hz to 23 kHz within 3 dB. MartinLogan rates sensitivity at 90 dB; Hi-Fi World's independent bench measurement found 88 dB. Nominal impedance is 4 ohms, dipping to a demanding 0.8 ohms at 20 kHz.
MartinLogan's own manual recommends 50 to 400 watts per channel at 4 ohms. Hi-Fi World's independent review put it plainly: many amplifiers aren't stable into a load this demanding, so amplifier choice matters as much as wattage here.
What Reviewers Are Saying
Noel Keywood, Hi-Fi World, called the Classic ESL 9 "arguably the best loudspeaker I have ever heard, frightening me at times" — while cautioning that its demanding electrostatic load calls for a genuinely capable amplifier.
Roger Kanno, SoundStage!, agreed: "the midrange was ultraclear, revealing details in recordings that I'd never heard before, and the highs were equally clean, and never harsh." He added that "the bass was also very deep and fast-hitting, without bloat."
Who Is This Floorstanding Speaker Best For?
- You want MartinLogan's most affordable true Masterpiece Series speaker — the same flagship-tier XStat panel science, in its most accessible model
- Your amplifier is genuinely powerful and current-capable — the panel's demanding impedance calls for an amplifier that stays composed under 1 ohm, not just one with a high wattage number
- You want an electrostatic that doesn't need to sit far from the wall — the opposing ForceForward woofer array lets it sit as close as 8 inches from the wall behind it
- You want one speaker per cabinet, priced and shipped that way — the Classic ESL 9 is sold each, so order two for a stereo pair
- You want deep, fast bass without a separate subwoofer — the opposing woofer array reaches to 34 Hz within 3 dB on its own. For the deepest home-theater effects, add one of our subwoofers and let the towers do what they do best
How Does It Connect to Your System?
Thanks to the opposing ForceForward woofer array, the Classic ESL 9 can sit as close as 8 inches from the wall behind it — give the panel itself a couple of feet from side walls to radiate cleanly. A pair of 5-way, tool-less bi-wire binding posts ships with jumpers installed for single-wire use.
Keep the panel out of direct sunlight and away from dust or smoke, and clean it only with a dry, soft cloth — never a spray cleaner.
Two cables, two speakers, and you are listening.
Pairs Well With
What finishes the system around a pair of Classic ESL 9 towers:
- Stereo amplifiers — a powerful, current-capable amplifier is the single most important match for this speaker
- Integrated amplifiers — only for an integrated amplifier confirmed stable into a demanding, sub-1-ohm load
- Speaker cables — the Classic ESL 9 is bi-wire capable, so a bi-wire run is an option here
- Audio racks — house the electronics driving a speaker this demanding
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the price for one speaker or a pair?
One. The Classic ESL 9 is sold each, so order two for a stereo pair, or one to match an existing speaker.
What amplifier do I need?
MartinLogan recommends 50 to 400 watts per channel at 4 ohms — but wattage alone isn't the whole story. The panel's impedance drops to under 1 ohm at 20kHz, so an amplifier that stays stable and current-capable into that kind of load matters more than its peak power rating.
Can I bi-wire the Classic ESL 9?
Yes. A pair of 5-way, tool-less binding posts ships with jumpers installed for single-wire use; remove them to bi-wire.
How close to the wall can I place it?
As close as 8 inches, thanks to the opposing ForceForward woofer array that cancels out front-wall bass reflections — much closer than a typical electrostatic speaker allows.
How do I care for the electrostatic panel?
The same basics as any MartinLogan panel: no direct sunlight, no spray cleaners, and only an occasional dusting with a dry, soft cloth.
What finishes are available?
Walnut, Cherry, and Gloss Black.
