MartinLogan MC6 In-Wall/In-Ceiling Speaker - White - Each
What You Need to Know
Electrostatic Character, Hidden in the Ceiling
MartinLogan made its name on electrostatic panels, and the MC6 carries that DNA into architectural installation. It's the most popular size in the Motion CI range — a 6.5-inch woofer paired with the company's signature Folded Motion tweeter — and it disappears into a ceiling or wall while sounding nothing like a typical in-ceiling speaker.
Sold individually, so you can buy exactly as many as your layout calls for: a pair for a room, four for a distributed system, or a matched set of overheads for immersive surround.
The Folded Motion Tweeter Does Something Dome Tweeters Can't
Rather than pushing air with a conventional dome, the Folded Motion tweeter uses an ultra-low-mass film folded accordion-style, which squeezes air instead. That folding yields eight to ten times the radiating surface area of a typical one-inch dome while requiring far less excursion to produce the same output.
Less mass moving less distance means faster transient response and very low distortion. You'll hear it in the top end — cymbals and strings that stay clean and unfatiguing, with detail that holds together when the mix gets dense.
A Nearly Invisible Install
The ultra-low-profile grille is micro-perforated with no visible bezel, and it's paintable — finish it to match your ceiling and the speaker essentially vanishes. A woven fiberglass woofer cone handles the low end with the speed to keep up with the tweeter above it.
Installation is designed for real-world conditions: spring-loaded binding posts with a generous 4.5mm wire access hole accept banana plugs, pins, or bare wire up to 12AWG, and dog-ear mounting clamps grip drywall from a quarter inch to a full inch thick.
Is This Right for You?
A few things to confirm before you order:
- This is a single speaker. Sold each, so order the quantity your room actually needs — two for a stereo pair, more for a distributed or overhead layout.
- There's no back enclosure. The MC6 is open-backed by design, using the cavity behind it as additional airspace for better performance. If you need sound isolation between rooms or floors, an optional retrofittable back enclosure is sold separately.
- Check your cavity depth and joist spacing. The speaker needs a round cutout with roughly four and a quarter inches of clearance behind the surface. Confirm you have the depth and that no wiring or ductwork occupies the space before you cut.
Setup & Installation
The MC6 mounts into drywall between joists using dog-ear style clamps that rotate into place and tighten against the back of the surface. Cut a round opening of approximately 7.75 inches in diameter, allowing about 4.25 inches of depth behind it, and leave at least a half inch of clearance around the inside of the cutout for the clamps to swing. Always confirm what's behind the surface before cutting.
Connect your speaker wire to the spring-loaded binding posts before setting the speaker into the opening — the pre-installation access makes this considerably easier than working through a finished hole. If you want to firm up the sound, adding cross bracing inside the cavity roughly a foot above and below the speaker will stiffen the surface and can improve performance.
Features & Specifications
Folded Motion Tweeter
An accordion-folded, ultra-low-mass film diaphragm delivers eight to ten times the surface area of a typical dome tweeter with faster transients and very low distortion.
6.5-Inch Woven Fiberglass Woofer
A lightweight, rigid cone provides the output and bass extension the smaller MC4 can't match, with the speed to blend seamlessly into the tweeter.
Vojtko Crossover Network
Hand-built from high-quality components with deliberately simple topology, tuned to hand off cleanly between drivers.
Paintable, Bezel-Free Micro-Perforated Grille
An ultra-low-profile grille with no visible frame lets the speaker finish flush and disappear into the ceiling.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use it in a wall as well as a ceiling?
Yes. The round format and dog-ear mounting work in either orientation. For a ceiling application where listeners sit off to one side rather than directly beneath, the angled MC6-HT is worth considering instead.
Do I need a back box?
Not for performance — the MC6 is designed to use the open cavity as airspace, which is why it sounds fuller than many enclosed designs. Add the optional back enclosure when you need to control sound transmission to an adjacent room or the floor above.
Will it work as a Dolby Atmos height channel?
It's well suited to overhead duty in an immersive system, and because it shares the Folded Motion tweeter with MartinLogan's other Motion speakers, it timbre-matches naturally with them across the front and surround channels.
