Michell's Entry Point Into Real High-End Vinyl

The Michell TecnoDec is Michell Engineering's entry-level turntable. It shares real engineering with the flagship GyroDec, not just its looks: the same inverted oil-circulating main bearing, the same impedance-matched acrylic platter concept, and the same free-standing motor design. What's gone is the GyroDec's suspended sub-chassis, traded away to reach a lower price.

This is the last turntable John Michell designed himself before his death in 2003, and it's remained in continuous production largely unchanged ever since. This package includes the T2i tonearm — Michell's own entry-level arm, sold exclusively with the TecnoDec — along with a UniCover dust cover and record clamp.

It ships without a cartridge, so you can choose one to match your system and budget. The T2i tonearm's adjustable anti-skating and counterweight accept a wide range of both moving-magnet and moving-coil designs, not just one narrow spec.

An Inverted Bearing and a Free-Standing Motor

Michell's inverted bearing puts the point of rotation at the top of the assembly rather than the bottom, with an oil-circulating Archimedean screw machined into the bore to keep the bearing lubricated as it spins. The acrylic platter is impedance-matched to absorb record vibrations rather than reflect them back into the groove.

The motor is machined from a solid billet of aircraft-grade aluminum and sits free-standing, with the drive belt as its only connection to the rest of the turntable. Three adjustable aluminum feet with Sorbothane inserts isolate the whole assembly from the shelf underneath.

The T2i Tonearm

T2i stands for "T2 Improved": Michell upgraded the arm's damping, counterweight assembly, bearings, and internal wiring (developed for its pricier T8 tonearm) over the original T2. The one-piece aluminum arm tube is hand-assembled for low friction and accurate tracking, with adjustable anti-skating built in.

The T2i isn't sold separately — it comes only with the TecnoDec. When you're ready to move up, the same armboard accepts Michell's own T3, T8, and TecnoArm 2 tonearms as direct upgrades.

How Does It Connect to Your System?

The TecnoDec has no built-in phono preamp, and this package includes no cartridge. Two choices come first: a moving-magnet or moving-coil cartridge for the T2i tonearm, and a phono preamp with gain matched to whichever cartridge you pick.

Once both are in place, one RCA cable (with the T2i's own low-capacitance wiring and Neutrik plugs) runs from the tonearm to your amplifier or receiver's phono input, or to a separate outboard phono preamp.
