The 1978 Classic, Rebuilt by the Man Who Helped Design It

The Mission 770 is a large two-way standmount with an 8-inch mineral-loaded polypropylene woofer and a 1.25-inch soft dome tweeter. The original 770 of 1978 made Mission's name. Peter Comeau, now Mission's Director of Acoustic Design, worked on that speaker and led this one. The look is faithful, down to the white baffle and the logo, but the drivers, crossover and cabinet are new. It is designed and built in Huntingdon, England.

Why the Cabinet Is Different This Time

The 1978 speaker used a thin-wall, bitumen-damped box in the BBC style. The new one uses a twin-wall sandwich of MDF and particle board bonded with damping glue, plus internal bracing. Stereophile's measurements found the reflex port tuned to 30 Hz, which Comeau chose to avoid one-note bass.

Mission quotes 42 Hz to 20 kHz within 3 dB, 88 dB sensitivity and 8 ohms nominal with a 6 ohm minimum. Recommended power is 25 to 200 watts, and peak output is rated at 117 dB. Stereophile estimated sensitivity about 2.5 dB lower than specified but called the 770 a relatively easy load.

How Much Room It Takes

Each cabinet is 11.8 inches wide, 23.2 tall and 12.7 deep with terminals, and weighs 42 pounds. The crossover sits at 2.9 kHz on separate bass and treble boards with polypropylene capacitors and air-core inductors. A single pair of binding posts sits on the back. Finishes are walnut or black real-wood veneer with the white baffle.

Stereophile lists the 770 in Class B of its Recommended Components, every edition from 2024 through 2026. Its entry cites John Atkinson: a midrange "warm, detailed, and musically involving" and a character "more than the sum of its parts."

How Do They Connect to Your System?

Assemble the stands, place the speakers about two and a half feet from the wall behind them and well away from side walls, and angle them slightly toward the seat. What Hi-Fi? found toe-in tightened the imaging.
