The MoFi Electronics UltraPhono Pro is a solid-state phono preamplifier for moving magnet and moving coil cartridges. It shares its design thinking, and its designer, with MoFi's flagship MasterPhono, at less than half the price.

Designer Peter Madnick also created the MasterPhono. Here, he kept the parts and circuit ideas that mattered most for sound quality. He dropped the MasterPhono's dual-chassis layout and some of its extra flexibility. That's how the UltraPhono Pro fits in one, more affordable box.

Inside, fully discrete J-FET and MOSFET stages handle amplification. RIAA equalization is done passively, with zero feedback in the circuit. MoFi rates RIAA accuracy at ±0.05dB. That's an exacting figure for a phono stage at this price.

A seven-stage regulated, balanced power supply feeds the circuit. There are no tubes here: every gain stage is solid-state, chosen for a low noise floor rather than for the coloration a valve would add.

One Input, Real Flexibility Where It Counts

The UltraPhono Pro has a single RCA input. It's built to serve one turntable at a time, not to switch between several. Gain and loading are both set from the front panel instead.

RCA output gain runs 40, 52, or 65dB. The balanced XLR output adds a bit more at each step: 46, 58, or 71dB. That range covers a high-output moving magnet cartridge all the way to a low-output moving coil.

Loading is switchable across five settings: 100, 300, 500, and 1,000 ohms, plus the standard 47k ohm setting for moving magnet cartridges. A front-panel switch also flips between stereo and mono playback. A subsonic filter cuts rumble below the audible range.

Frequency response spans 10Hz to 50kHz, within ±0.20dB. Distortion measures between 0.005% and 0.013%, depending on gain and output level. The chassis measures 17 inches wide and about 2.5 inches tall. Its body is steel, with a brushed aluminum top and front panel.

How Does It Connect to Your System?

Connect your turntable's phono cable to the single RCA input on the rear panel. Set gain and loading from the front to match your cartridge's output and recommended load.

Run the RCA or balanced XLR output to your preamplifier or integrated amp's line-level input, whichever your system supports. The balanced output offers slightly higher gain at each setting.

Engage the subsonic filter if your turntable or room picks up low-frequency rumble that shows up as woofer pumping rather than actual bass.

How is this different from the standard MoFi UltraPhono?

They are not the same product. The standard UltraPhono is an older, lower-priced unit with a built-in headphone amp. The UltraPhono Pro is newer and better. It takes its circuit from MoFi's flagship MasterPhono. It has no headphone output.
