The Gold 100 6G is a true three-way in a standmount cabinet. An 8-inch HDT C-CAM bass driver, a 3-inch HDT C-CAM midrange driver and an MPD III tweeter each take their own band, with crossovers at 700 Hz and 2.6 kHz.

Three-way standmounts are rare because they are hard to do well. Reviewers keep reaching for the same comparison here, and it is not to other bookshelf speakers. It is to small floorstanders.

HDT, and Why the Cones Are Hexagons

HDT stands for Hexagonal Diaphragm Technology, Monitor Audio’s newest metal cone. In its own words, the cone "employs a hexagonal pattern to disrupt symmetries in the cone breakup", which is a precise way of saying the cone stays a piston for longer before it starts to ring.

The Numbers, and What They Ask of You

Monitor Audio quotes an in-room response of 32 Hz to 60 kHz at minus 6 dB, and 49 Hz to 60 kHz free-field. Sensitivity is 86.5 dB. Nominal impedance is 4 ohms, with a minimum of 3.9 ohms at 140 Hz.

That 4 ohm rating matters. The recommendation is 130 to 500 watts into 4 ohms, and peak output is quoted at 119 dB. The rear HiVe II port is tuned to 38 Hz. This speaker wants a serious amplifier, and rewards one.

MPD III, the Tweeter That Is Not a Dome

The high frequencies come from a Micro Pleated Diaphragm rather than a dome. Monitor Audio says the latest MPD III "delivers precise high-frequency sound with greater consistency, clarity and accuracy". It is the same family of tweeter the company uses further up its range.

How Do They Connect to Your System?

Speaker cable runs from your amplifier to the binding posts on the back of each cabinet, red to red and black to black, with both runs the same length. These are passive speakers, so there is nothing else to power or configure.

Set them on stands rated for the weight, bring the tweeter to ear height, and give the rear port room to breathe. Then angle them in toward your seat. A 4 ohm speaker also deserves a cable of sensible gauge for the run.
