The Smallest Gold, and Why That Is the Point

The Gold 50 6G is the compact two-way in Monitor Audio’s Gold Series 6G. One 6-inch HDT C-CAM mid-bass driver and one MPD III pleated tweeter share a cabinet just over a foot tall, crossing over at 2.5 kHz. It is the model in the range built for smaller rooms and real stands.

Small does not mean entry-level here. The driver technology is the same HDT cone and MPD III tweeter used in the larger Gold models, and the build is the same. What you give up against a Gold 100 6G is bass extension and a dedicated midrange driver, not the quality of what remains.

HDT, and Why the Cones Are Hexagons

HDT stands for Hexagonal Diaphragm Technology, Monitor Audio’s newest metal cone. In its own words, the cone "employs a hexagonal pattern to disrupt symmetries in the cone breakup", which is a precise way of saying the cone stays a piston for longer before it starts to ring.

Monitor Audio quotes 55 Hz to 60 kHz free-field at minus 6 dB, and 44 Hz to 60 kHz in-room. Sensitivity is 85 dB. Nominal impedance is 4 ohms, and the minimum is 4.0 ohms at 225 Hz, so the load stays close to its rating across the band.

The recommended amplifier is 130 to 300 watts into 4 ohms, and peak output is quoted at 114 dB. The rear HiVe II port is tuned to 50 Hz. Each cabinet measures 12.6 by 7.3 by 11.9 inches and weighs 18 pounds 12 ounces.

MPD III, the Tweeter That Is Not a Dome

The high frequencies come from a Micro Pleated Diaphragm rather than a dome. Monitor Audio says the latest MPD III "delivers precise high-frequency sound with greater consistency, clarity and accuracy". How Do They Connect to Your System?

Speaker cable runs from your amplifier to the binding posts on the back of each cabinet, red to red and black to black, with both runs the same length. These are passive speakers, so there is nothing else to power or configure.

Set them on stands, bring the tweeter to ear height, and give the rear port room to breathe. Then angle them in toward your seat. A 4 ohm speaker also deserves a cable of sensible gauge for the length of the run.
