Four Drivers, Three Ways, One Refined Tower
The Monitor Audio Silver 500 7G is the largest floorstanding speaker in the seventh-generation Silver Series. It's a three-way design, built around four drivers per tower.
A 1-inch C-CAM gold dome tweeter sits inside a Uniform Dispersion Waveguide II. That waveguide widens the tweeter's sweet spot. Off-axis seats still hear accurate highs.
A 3-inch C-CAM midrange driver handles the crucial vocal range. Two 8-inch C-CAM bass drivers back it up. Both use Rigid Surface Technology II to move the air needed for real low-end weight.
Frequency response spans 27Hz to 35kHz, measured at -6dB. Sensitivity rates at 90.5dB, so it doesn't demand a massive amplifier to play at satisfying volume.
Built for Real Rooms, Not Just Showrooms
Impedance measures 8 ohms nominal, dipping to 4.1 ohms minimum at 150Hz. Monitor Audio recommends amplifiers rated between 80 and 250 watts. The speaker itself can handle up to 250 watts RMS.
The crossover splits duties at 800Hz and 2.7kHz. That keeps each driver working in its own comfort zone. A rear-ported cabinet, tuned to 36Hz, allows flexible placement away from the wall.
Sturdy outrigger feet steady each tower, with removable spikes or rubber feet depending on your flooring. At just over 43 inches tall and about 49 pounds each, they feel substantial without overwhelming a living room.
The Silver 500 7G comes in Natural Walnut, Black Oak, Ash, Satin White, and High Gloss Black, so it can suit a range of rooms and finishes.
What Reviewers Are Saying
Robert Schryer reviewed the Silver 500 7G for Stereophile on January 20, 2022. He described it as "dynamic and transient-fast," noting that "it sounded almost hornlike."
On a live recording, he wrote that it "sounded sophisticated—clarion-clear, elaborately alive, with tones finely layered above and below the primary one."
Andrew Robinson reviewed it for his channel and site on January 15, 2022. He called it "an incredibly enjoyable and well-rounded speaker, good for both music and movies."
On build quality, he said "the Silver Series monsters the Bronze with respect to build quality and materials—I mean it's not even close."
Who Is This Speaker Best For?
- Listeners who want real bass without a subwoofer. Twin 8-inch drivers give the 500 7G genuine low-end reach on their own.
- Anyone building a dual-purpose music and home theater room. Reviewers praised it for both two-channel listening and movies.
- Rooms that need a speaker that also looks the part. Five furniture-grade finishes make it easy to match your decor.
- Listeners with a modest to mid-power amplifier. A 90.5dB sensitivity rating means it doesn't demand huge amounts of power to sound its best.
- Not the right fit for a small room or nearfield desktop setup. At over 43 inches tall, the 500 7G is built for a proper living room or dedicated listening space.
How Does It Connect to Your System?
Connect each tower to an amplifier or receiver's speaker outputs using standard binding posts on the rear panel. Its 4.1-ohm minimum impedance calls for an amplifier comfortable driving a demanding load.
Because it's rear-ported, leave some breathing room between the speaker and the wall behind it. Moving it closer adds bass warmth. Pulling it out tightens and tames the low end.
Attach the outrigger feet with spikes for carpet, or the included rubber feet for hard flooring, to keep each tower stable and properly aligned.
Pairs Well With
Building your system? Here are some great companions for the Monitor Audio Silver 500 7G:
- Integrated amplifiers comfortable driving its 4.1-ohm minimum load
- AV receivers for a combined music and home theater setup
- Speaker cables to connect to its rear binding posts
- Subwoofers if you want to extend bass even further for home theater use
- Audio racks to house the electronics driving your new towers
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a subwoofer with these speakers?
Not necessarily. Two 8-inch bass drivers per tower give the 500 7G real low-frequency extension on their own, though a subwoofer can still add reach for home theater use.
How much amplifier power do I need?
Monitor Audio recommends 80 to 250 watts per channel. Its 90.5dB sensitivity means it plays convincingly loud without needing the upper end of that range.
How far from the wall should I place them?
Since the cabinet is rear-ported, give each tower some space behind it. Exact placement depends on your room, but pulling it further from the wall generally tightens the bass.
What finishes are available?
Natural Walnut, Black Oak, Ash, Satin White, and High Gloss Black are all available, covering both wood-veneer and painted looks.
What's the warranty?
Monitor Audio covers the Silver 500 7G for five years against manufacturing defects.
