The Musical Fidelity Nu-Vista Vinyl 2 is a flagship MM/MC phono stage built around eight 7586 nuvistor tubes, set in a balanced buffer circuit. Nuvistors are a tiny, metal-shelled kind of vacuum tube. They have been largely out of production since the 1970s.

Musical Fidelity has kept a private stock of them for its Nu-Vista line since the 1990s, and the Vinyl 2 is part of that same lineage. It shares the Nu-Vista name with the brand's Nu-Vista DAC, launched alongside it. The Nu-Vista 600.2 and 800.2 integrated amplifiers carry the name too.

This is the Vinyl 2, Musical Fidelity's reference phono stage, introduced in late 2023. It's distinct from the newer Nu-Vista Vinyl S. The Vinyl S is a companion model, built in a smaller, more affordable cabinet for owners of the compact 600.2 and 800.2 amps.

The Vinyl S is not a replacement for the Vinyl 2. Both remain current, and each is aimed at a different size of system, so the choice is about the rack it joins rather than which came later.

Build quality matches the ambition. The chassis measures 483 by 188 by 510mm and weighs 22kg. An optional external Nu-Vista Uni PSU power supply is also available, for owners who want to isolate the power section further.

Precision Adjustment for Every Cartridge

Gain steps in 3dB increments across four MM settings: 40, 43, 46, and 49dB. Four MC settings step the same way: 60, 63, 66, and 69dB, each with an optional +6dB boost. Every setting is made from the front panel menu or the remote. There are no internal jumpers to reach.

MC loading offers eight switchable values: 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 400, 800, and 1,000 ohms, plus a 47 kOhm setting. MM input loading is fixed at 47 kOhms. Capacitance is selectable from 50 to 400pF on MM, or fixed at 400pF on MC.

Three curves are built in: RIAA, Decca and Columbia. The last two suit older pressings, cut before RIAA became the standard. RIAA accuracy on the standard curve is rated within ±0.2dB on MM and ±0.2/-0.25dB on MC.

Signal-to-noise ratio exceeds 110dB A-weighted on MM, and 98dB on MC. THD at 1kHz stays under 0.005% on MM and under 0.008% on MC. Those are reference figures, not merely good ones. A subsonic filter offers off, mild or standard settings. The standard setting cuts at 20Hz with an 18dB per octave slope, which is enough for a warped record.

Menu-Driven Control With a Warm-Up Ritual

A front-panel display and menu system replace the small switches found on most phono stages. Gain, loading, capacitance, EQ curve, and subsonic filtering are all set through the menu or the remote. Settings store per input, so each turntable keeps its own setup.

Two balanced XLR inputs and two unbalanced RCA inputs are provided. One balanced XLR output and one unbalanced RCA output round out the back panel, and both can run at the same time. Each input has its own ground terminal.

An LED beside the tubes tracks warm-up. It glows red during a brief startup mute, then orange once the unit is operational. It turns blue once the nuvistors reach full thermal stability, usually after about 20 minutes.
