Your Turntable Came With a Wall Wart. This Replaces It.
Turntables get careful attention everywhere except the power inlet. The motor, the platter and the tonearm are engineered to fine tolerances. Then the whole thing runs off a small switching adapter. The X-Power TT is Musical Fidelity's answer to that gap, and it revives the X-profile chassis while it is at it.
It is a linear supply that puts out 15 volts DC at 2 amps. Musical Fidelity designed it around its own decks: the Roundtable S and S2, the M6xTT and the M8xTT. One IEC inlet goes to the wall. One DC lead goes to the turntable. That is the whole interface.
Built Like the X-Series People Remember
The chassis is a one-piece aluminum extrusion in the rounded X shape, finished with a brushed aluminum faceplate. It stands 4.13 inches tall, 10.79 deep and 4.25 wide, and weighs a little over five pounds. It sits beside or behind the deck rather than under it.
What a Linear Supply Does Differently
A switching adapter makes its own high-frequency noise. That is how it works, not a defect. A linear supply takes the slower route instead. The X-Power TT starts with an isolating transformer wound with copper-foil shielding, which stands between your mains and your turntable.
Rectification and regulation follow. Filtration capacity is 10,000 microfarads, using low-ESR capacitors chosen for low noise. The output holds 15 volts to within half a percent. Ripple is rated at 35 millivolts peak to peak or less.
Two Circuits You Notice Only When They Are Missing
A soft-start circuit limits the inrush of current at switch-on. That surge is hard on motor electronics and on the supply itself, and this one smooths it out. Surge protection sits alongside it, guarding against voltage events arriving from the wall.
Speed Control Still Belongs to the Turntable
Musical Fidelity's decks already generate their own AC for the motor, from a DC-driven generator that sets frequency and voltage. The X-Power TT does not take that job over. It feeds that circuit, with more reserve than the stock adapter and low output impedance for heavy mass-loaded platters.
Who Is This Power Supply Best For?
- You own a Roundtable S, S2, M6xTT or M8xTT — this was built for your deck specifically. The plug fits, the voltage matches and nothing needs adapting, so the upgrade is a five-minute swap rather than a project.
- Your listening room shares circuits with the rest of the house — the isolating transformer puts a barrier between the mains and the turntable. Dimmers, LED bulbs and chargers all put noise on a house circuit.
- You run a heavy platter — the transformer carries more reserve than the supplied adapter, and output impedance is kept low. The motor gets current on demand instead of drawing from a supply already at its limit.
- You care what the rack looks like — extruded aluminum in the X-profile with a brushed faceplate, rather than a black plastic brick hanging off a wall socket behind the furniture.
- You have checked what your turntable actually wants — the output is 15 volts DC at 2 amps, and other decks vary in voltage, current and plug polarity. Some Pro-Ject tables match it. Call us at 800-942-0220 before ordering, or browse our other power supplies to find the one built for your deck.
How Does It Connect to Your System?
Unplug the adapter that came with your turntable and set it aside. Run the DC lead from the X-Power TT to the same socket on the deck. Connect a power cord from the IEC inlet on the back to the wall, and switch on.
Give it a spot beside or behind the turntable, not underneath the plinth. Any transformer radiates a magnetic field, and a cartridge generates its signal from a magnetic field, so a little distance is free insurance. Plug it in once and forget it.
Pairs Well With
The rest of what sits between your record and your amplifier:
- Phono preamplifiers — the other place a quiet power supply pays off, since phono stages amplify the smallest signal in your system.
- Power cables — the IEC inlet takes a standard cord, so you can use whichever one you prefer.
- Power conditioners — treat the mains feeding the whole analog front end, not just the turntable.
- Turntable platforms — a level, decoupled surface keeps footfall and cabinet resonance out of the groove.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is the X-Power TT different from the Musical Fidelity X-Power?
They share a chassis and a name, and do different jobs. The X-Power is an AC line conditioner that cleans wall power for several components. The X-Power TT is a DC power supply for one turntable. Many owners end up with both.
What does a linear power supply do that a switching adapter doesn't?
A switching supply chops the incoming voltage at high frequency, which is efficient and compact but generates noise. A linear supply steps voltage down with a transformer and filters it. The result is bulkier, heavier and electrically quieter.
Is the X-Power TT hard to install?
It is a cable swap. Power the turntable down, pull the original adapter, plug the X-Power TT into the same DC socket and connect it to the wall. No tools, no settings and nothing to configure.
Does it use a detachable power cord?
Yes. The rear panel carries a standard IEC C14 inlet rated at 10 amps, and the unit runs on 115 volts AC at 50 or 60 Hz. Any IEC cord fits, including whatever you already have on hand.
Where should I put it on my rack?
Anywhere the DC lead reaches, with a small caveat. Keep it off the same shelf as the platter and tonearm if you can, and leave a little air around it. It runs warm, the way any linear supply does.
