NAD Electronics has been making CD players since the format was introduced. The C 589 is their statement that CD playback in 2026 can be meaningfully better than it was ten years ago, using technologies that simply did not exist when many of these discs were pressed.

The C 589 is the flagship of NAD’s Classic Series, sitting at $1,399 and representing a significant step up from the entry-level C 538 ($399). It brings Masters Series technology — the caliber normally reserved for NAD’s reference-tier components — into the Classic Series for the first time in a CD player.

The ESS ES9039PRO DAC — Reference-Grade Conversion

At the core of the C 589’s analogue output stage is the ESS ES9039PRO — one of the most advanced digital-to-analogue converter chips currently available. The ES9039PRO is ESS Technology’s reference-grade offering, found in high-end DACs and CD players well above the C 589’s price point.

A DAC — digital-to-analogue converter — is the component that converts the digital data read from the disc into an analogue audio signal. The quality of this conversion determines how much musical information reaches your amplifier and speakers. A lesser DAC introduces noise, distortion, and a subtle graininess that adds up to fatigue over long listening sessions. The ES9039PRO is engineered for an exceptionally high signal-to-noise ratio and ultra-low harmonic distortion, which means the signal that emerges from the C 589’s output is a clean, accurate representation of what is on the disc.

QRONO d2a — What It Is and Why It Matters

The C 589 includes QRONO d2a, a proprietary digital audio processing technology developed by MQA Labs. QRONO d2a operates on the digital signal before it reaches the DAC, targeting the aspect of digital audio that is most difficult to get right: timing.

Digital audio reconstruction is not simply a matter of reading numbers and converting them to voltages. The mathematical process of converting a sampled, discrete digital signal back into a continuous analogue waveform involves reconstruction filters that can introduce subtle timing errors — known as pre-ringing and post-ringing — that smear transients and reduce the sense of precision and air in the music. QRONO d2a is a time-domain optimized digital filter that refines this reconstruction process, reducing temporal smearing so that transients land where they should, spatial cues are more coherent, and musical flow feels more natural.

NAD has applied similar MQA Labs technology to its Masters Series components, including the $5,999 M33 V2 streaming amplifier. The C 589 brings this processing to the Classic Series for the first time in a CD player.

Dynamic Digital Headroom — Solving a Hidden Problem

The C 589 also incorporates Dynamic Digital Headroom (DDH), a technology that addresses a common but often unrecognized problem in digital audio: inter-sample clipping.

When a CD is mastered, the audio data is scaled so that peaks appear to reach — but not exceed — the maximum digital level. However, when the DAC reconstructs the continuous analogue waveform from these samples, the peaks between samples can momentarily exceed the digital ceiling. This is inter-sample clipping, and it introduces distortion on peaks — especially on louder or more dynamically compressed recordings. The result is a subtle harshness on transients and an overall reduction in dynamic accuracy that most listeners sense as fatigue without being able to identify its cause.

Dynamic Digital Headroom prevents this by managing headroom in the digital domain before conversion, ensuring that even the loudest, most aggressively mastered CDs play cleanly and without distortion at the output. Your existing CD collection will sound smoother and more dynamic than you may expect.

Full MQA CD Decoding

The C 589 includes full MQA CD decoding. MQA CDs encode a hi-res audio master in a standard CD-compatible format — a compatible CD player or DAC reads the standard 16-bit/44.1kHz data normally, but an MQA-capable device can additionally decode the encoded high-resolution layer within that data. The C 589 fully decodes MQA CDs, revealing the additional resolution and timing information encoded in the disc. If you own MQA CDs or acquire them in future, the C 589 will play them at their full intended quality.

Precision Transport — Engineered for Reliability

A CD player’s transport mechanism is the mechanical system that spins the disc, moves the laser, and reads the data. A good transport reads discs quietly and accurately, tracks reliably across the full disc surface, and handles older or worn discs without difficulty. A poor transport introduces read errors that the error correction has to compensate for — and when error correction engages frequently, it can affect the timing accuracy of the data delivered to the DAC.

6.1-Inch Full-Colour Display — Your Collection, At a Glance

The front panel features a 6.1-inch full-colour LCD display with CD Text support. When a CD carries CD Text data — album and track title, artist name, and other metadata encoded on the disc itself — the C 589 reads and displays it in full colour, showing you what is playing from across the room. This is a significant upgrade from the simple green or white text displays common on CD players at any price.

Complete Output Suite — Standalone Player or Transport

The C 589 is designed to work in two fundamentally different configurations, and it provides the connections for both:

As a standalone CD player with its own DAC: the balanced XLR analogue outputs and unbalanced RCA analogue outputs connect directly to your integrated amplifier or preamplifier. Balanced XLR outputs provide a noise-cancelling connection that reduces interference between the player and the amplifier — particularly useful in systems with long cable runs or where noise from other components is a concern.
