A Whole System in One Box, With a Five-Inch Window Into It

The Uniti Atom is a streamer, a DAC, a preamplifier and a 40-watt Class AB power amplifier in a single case. Add speakers and you have a system. The front is dominated by a five-inch color screen that shows artwork rather than a row of characters.

The volume knob senses your hand as it approaches and wakes the display. The remote works on two-way Zigbee radio instead of infrared, so it does not need line of sight. Neither detail changes the sound. Both change how often you reach for your phone.

Streaming runs over Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and the list is long: AirPlay 2, Chromecast, Spotify Connect, TIDAL, Qobuz, internet radio and UPnP. It is Roon Ready. Bluetooth 4.2 covers a phone that is not on your network.

It Will Take Your Television Too

An HDMI ARC input pulls sound off a TV over the same cable the TV already uses, so a two-channel system can carry film and streaming without a separate receiver. Two optical inputs and a coaxial input handle disc players and set-top boxes.

There is one stereo RCA input for an analog source, plus a USB socket for a drive of your own files. A single RCA output can feed a subwoofer or a power amplifier, and a 3.5mm jack on the front takes headphones.

What It Will Play, and What the Amplifier Does

File support is generous. WAV runs to 32-bit and 384kHz. FLAC, AIFF and ALAC reach 24-bit and 384kHz. DSD64 and DSD128 both play. MP3, AAC and M4A top out at 48kHz and 320kbit, which is all those formats hold anyway.

The wired inputs sit lower, as they always do. USB accepts 44.1kHz to 384kHz at 16 or 24 bits. S/PDIF covers 32kHz to 192kHz, and the coaxial input adds DSD64 over DoP. Optical stops at 24-bit 96kHz.

The amplifier is rated 40 watts per channel into 8 ohms at 0.1% THD+N, in Class AB. That is a modest number by the standards of the price, and it is the single most important thing to think about before buying one.

Forty Watts Means the Speakers Matter

Forty Class AB watts will drive a sensitive standmount pair to satisfying levels in a normal room. It is less comfortable with large, inefficient floorstanders, and reviewers who tried it that way said so. Match it to easy speakers and it repays you in full.

Two more practical notes. Reviewers report the speaker terminals take banana plugs, so heavy spade-terminated cable may not fit. And the case is 9.6 inches wide by 3.7 high and 10.4 deep, at 15.4 pounds, so it needs no full-width shelf.

Who Is This Integrated Amplifier Best For?

You want one box and no separates — streamer, DAC, preamp and power amp, controlled from one app and one remote.
Your speakers are efficient standmounts — 40 Class AB watts is a good match for a sensitive pair in a normal room.
You use Roon, or you want to — the Atom is Roon Ready, alongside AirPlay 2, Chromecast and Spotify Connect.
The television is part of the system — HDMI ARC brings TV sound in without adding a receiver.
If you have a turntable or a shelf of analog sources, count the inputs first — there is one stereo RCA input and no phono stage. A turntable needs a phono preamplifier, and if it takes the only analog input, the Uniti Star is the model with more of them.

How Does It Connect to Your System?

Speakers go to the binding posts on the back, banana plugs first. Put the Atom on your network over Ethernet or Wi-Fi, then finish setup in the Focal & Naim app, which is also where you sign in to TIDAL, Qobuz and internet radio.

A television connects over HDMI ARC. A disc player or set-top box goes to optical or coaxial. One analog source takes the stereo RCA input, and a USB drive of your own files plugs in directly.

If you add a subwoofer, it takes the single RCA output on the back. That same output feeds a power amplifier instead, should you decide later that 40 watts is not enough for your speakers.
