A Reference DAC That Takes Headphones Seriously

The ONIX Zenith XDA20 is the digital heart of the flagship Zenith series. It is a reference-grade DAC with a true high-power headphone amplifier inside. Most DACs at this level treat the headphone jack as an afterthought. The XDA20 gives up to 1,620mW into 32 ohms, which is real power for serious headphones.

Two flagship ESS ES9039PRO chips do the conversion, one per channel. They feed a custom circuit built from eight OPA1611 op-amps. An XMOS XU316 takes PCM to 32-bit and 768kHz, and native DSD512. The results are reference class. Distortion is 0.0003%, and signal-to-noise is 127dB from the balanced outputs.

A 3.4-inch color touchscreen and a remote handle the controls. High and low gain settings match the headphone output to the load, so sensitive in-ears and demanding full-size cans are both at home.

Built Like Separates, Sized Like One Box

Power comes from two Talema transformers, with separate supplies for the digital and analog sides. Four large Vishay capacitors filter them. That is the kind of power supply you usually find in separate boxes. The case is CNC-machined aluminum, 12.6 pounds of it, cut to damp vibration.

Inputs cover USB, optical, coaxial and I²S. Ten selectable I²S pin-outs match almost any transport, ONIX's own XST20 among them. Line outputs are RCA at 2.1V and balanced XLR at 4.2V. The XDA20 can feed a preamp, an integrated amp, or a pair of powered speakers.
