Onkyo Muse Y-40: A Compact Streaming Amplifier for Any Room
The Onkyo Muse Y-40 is a compact streaming integrated amplifier. It combines a Class D amplifier, a network streamer, an MM phono input and HDMI ARC in a chassis 13.8 inches wide.
Onkyo rates it at 75 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 150 watts into 4 ohms. It comes in Black or Silver.
Axign Class D Power
An Axign Class D amplifier with MOSFET outputs drives your speakers. The circuit is temperature-controlled, so no cooling fan is needed.
A 5.46-Inch Color Display
The front display shows the input, volume and the track that is playing. Two of its screens show analog-style VU meters.
Streaming and Presets
Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, AirPlay 2 and Google Cast are built in. Four MY INPUT presets each store an input, sound settings and a network service, recalled with one press.
How the Y-40 Fits Your System
It drives speakers rated from 4 to 16 ohms. Three RCA inputs and an MM phono input cover analog sources, and HDMI ARC brings in your TV's sound.
Coaxial and optical inputs accept digital sources, and a front USB port plays music files from a storage drive. It streams over Wi-Fi or Ethernet and accepts Bluetooth.
What it will not do: it has no subwoofer output, bass management or room correction, and its phono input does not support moving coil cartridges. The Muse Y-50 adds these features.
What Reviewers Are Saying
Dennis Burger reviewed the Y-40 for SoundStage! Access (June 2026). On a dense, layered recording, he wrote: "It still sounds amazing."
He added: "Here, yet again, is a perfect example of "magic" as an emergent property of science and engineering."
Who Is This Integrated Amplifier Best For?
- Smaller spaces — a compact chassis with streaming, phono and HDMI ARC built in.
- Streamers — Spotify, TIDAL and Qobuz Connect, AirPlay 2 and Google Cast need no extra box.
- TV and music in one system — HDMI ARC plays your TV through your stereo speakers.
- Vinyl listeners with MM cartridges — plug a turntable straight into the phono input.
- Not for — systems that need a subwoofer output, room correction or an MC phono stage; look at the Muse Y-50.
How Does It Connect to Your System?
- Connect your left and right speakers to the speaker terminals.
- Plug in your sources: turntable to phono, other analog gear to the RCA inputs, and your TV to HDMI ARC.
- Attach the included wireless antenna, or connect an Ethernet cable.
- Set it up with the Onkyo Controller app, then use the app or the included remote.
The Y-40 comes in Black or Silver.
Pairs Well With
Build a compact system around the Y-40:
- Bookshelf speakers — a natural match for its compact size.
- Turntables — with a moving magnet cartridge for the phono input.
- Headphones — plug into the front 1/4" jack.
- Speaker cables — to connect it all.
Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add a subwoofer?
The Y-40 has no subwoofer output or bass management. The Muse Y-50 adds both.
Which streaming services are built in?
Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, AirPlay 2 and Google Cast. It also plays from a music server on your network and accepts Bluetooth.
