The 2M 78 Stylus — A Tip Cut for Shellac, Not for Microgroove

This is Ortofon's replacement stylus for playing 78 rpm records on a 2M cartridge. The diamond is spherical with a 65 µm radius, and Ortofon states plainly that it is “a replacement stylus for Ortofon 2M Mono and 2M 78.”

Sixty-five microns is roughly eight times the radius of a microgroove tip, and that is the point rather than a compromise. A 78's groove is far wider. A modern stylus drops to the bottom of it and reads damage and noise instead of music.

Which Bodies It Belongs On

Ortofon lists the Stylus 2M 78 for the 2M 78 and the 2M Mono. Those two share a group, so the same stylus fits either body — which is what lets one cartridge cover both a mono LP collection and a shellac one.

Ortofon states that the 2M series styli are interchangeable within three groups: Red, Blue and Silver; Bronze, Black and Black LVB 250; and the two mono variants, 2M Mono and 2M 78. The mono pair stands apart from the stereo groups, so a Red, Blue, Bronze or Black body is not where this belongs.

The Numbers That Matter at Setup

Ortofon specifies the spherical diamond at R 65 µm, dynamic lateral compliance of 18 µm/mN, tracking ability of 70 µm at 315 Hz, and 20 Hz – 20 kHz, +3/–1 dB. The stylus body is gray, which makes it easy to tell from a stereo assembly at a glance.

Tracking force runs 1.6 to 2.0 g, recommended 1.8 g. You will also need a turntable that actually turns at 78, and a phono stage or preamp that can be set away from the RIAA curve if you want the equalisation right.

How Do You Fit It?

Pull the fitted assembly straight off the front of the body — it unclips by hand — and press this one on until it seats. Reset tracking force, then change the platter speed. On a 2M Mono body the swap back to a microgroove assembly is the same few seconds, and the body stays aligned throughout, which is why one cartridge can serve both libraries.

Around 1,000 hours is the usual figure, though it turns on how clean your records are and how accurately the cartridge is set up. A worn tip damages records, so replace it on schedule rather than by ear. Shellac is more abrasive than vinyl, so a 78 tip generally works harder for its hours.
