Where the 2M Series Stops Compromising on the Diamond
The 2M Blue is the rung of Ortofon's moving magnet range where the stylus becomes a nude diamond. Nothing about the body changes. The part that touches the record does, and that is the part that decides how much of the groove you actually hear.
It puts out 5.5 mV into any moving magnet phono input, weighs 7.2 grams, and bolts to a standard half-inch headshell. Ortofon has built this shape in Denmark since 1918, and the fitting has not moved.
What a Nude Diamond Actually Changes
A bonded stylus glues a small diamond tip onto a metal shank. A nude stylus is one solid piece of diamond. There is less mass at the tip, so it changes direction faster and follows a groove wall that is moving very quickly indeed.
Where the Engineering Shows Up in the Sound
The tip is an elliptical diamond measuring 8 by 18 microns on an aluminum cantilever. Inside sit quad coils wound with copper around split pole pins, the design Ortofon uses to keep high-frequency response even across the range.
Channel separation reaches 25 dB at 1 kHz. Balance holds to 1.5 dB. Frequency response runs 20 Hz to 20 kHz, within plus 2 and minus 1 dB, and tracking ability measures 80 microns at 315 Hz.
Numbers You Will Use at Setup
Track it at 1.8 grams, anywhere from 1.6 to 2.0. Dynamic compliance is 20 micrometers per millinewton, which suits the medium-mass arms fitted to most turntables. Load it at 47 kilohms with 150 to 300 picofarads.
What Reviewers Are Saying
Stereophile made the 2M Blue a Recommended Component in 2025. Reviewing it, BJR found "the transients and bloom of the string quartet were reproduced with no trace of coloration or smear. Superb transient articulation and dynamics."
Mark Mickelson at The Audio Beat wrote that "you get the audiophile treatment: a full-range, highly resolving presentation that sounds neither stiff nor unforgiving," adding that its balance "may be its greatest feat."
Joe Svetlik named it one of the ten best cartridges of 2020 in What Hi-Fi?, and Part-Time Audiophile included it in its 2022 phono cartridge buyers guide.
Who Is This Phono Cartridge Best For?
- You have a turntable worth feeding properly — a nude elliptical diamond reads groove detail a bonded tip cannot reach, so the records already on your shelf give up more than they did
- You use an ordinary moving magnet input — 5.5 mV into 47 kilohms is what every phono stage already supplies, so the cartridge is the only thing you buy
- You want the setup to stay simple — 1.8 grams and a standard half-inch mount mean a stylus scale and the gauge in your turntable box are the whole toolkit
- You intend to keep climbing — the 2M Bronze and 2M Black styli fit this same body, so the next step costs a stylus rather than a cartridge and a fresh alignment
- Your tonearm takes a Rega three-point fitting or a bottom-mount headshell — this is the standard half-inch version and will not bolt to those arms. Ortofon builds the same cartridge as the 2MR Blue for Rega arms and the 2M Blue Verso for bottom-mount headshells, and we stock both
How Does It Connect to Your System?
Two screws hold the cartridge to a half-inch headshell or tonearm, and four colored pins take the tonearm leads. Set overhang with the gauge your turntable came with, then set tracking force to 1.8 grams and anti-skate to match.
From there the arm cable runs to any moving magnet phono input, built into your amplifier or standing on its own. Fit it, set it, play a record.
Pairs Well With
A cartridge is one part of the chain. These are the categories that make the most of it:
- Turntables — any deck with a standard half-inch mount
- Phono Preamplifiers — for amplifiers without a phono input
- Record Cleaning Accessories — clean grooves keep a diamond honest
- Turntable Accessories — scales and gauges for tracking force
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the 2M Blue fit my turntable?
It fits any standard half-inch tonearm or headshell, which covers most turntables. Rega three-point arms and bottom-mount headshells take a different version of this cartridge.
What does nude mean on a stylus?
It means the diamond is one solid piece rather than a tip bonded to a metal shank. Less mass sits at the tip, so it follows rapid groove movement more closely.
What tracking force should I use?
Ortofon recommends 1.8 grams. The usable range is 1.6 to 2.0 grams, so a basic stylus scale is all you need to set it correctly.
Can I upgrade later without a new cartridge?
Yes. The 2M Bronze and 2M Black styli fit this body directly. You swap the stylus, keep your alignment, and gain a finer diamond profile.
Do I need a moving coil phono stage?
Use the moving magnet input. At 5.5 mV this is a strong moving magnet output, far more than a moving coil stage is built to accept.
What loading does it want?
47 kilohms, the standard moving magnet value, with 150 to 300 picofarads of capacitance. That figure includes your tonearm cable, which is easy to forget.
