The 2M Bronze Stylus — Fine Line Geometry, Fitted in Seconds

This is Ortofon's replacement stylus for the 2M Bronze, supplied on its own. The diamond is a nude Fine Line, and it clips onto the front of a 2M Bronze body without the cartridge leaving the headshell.

Fine Line is the reason the Bronze exists. A narrow contact radius reads groove detail that a broader tip passes over, and it spreads contact along the groove wall rather than concentrating it at a point.

Which Bodies It Belongs On

Ortofon recommends this stylus for the 2M Bronze, the 2MR Bronze and the 2M Bronze Premounted. It is the matched part for all three, and the one the cartridge's published figures were measured with.

Ortofon states that the 2M series styli are interchangeable within three groups: Red, Blue and Silver; Bronze, Black and Black LVB 250; and the two mono variants, 2M Mono and 2M 78. The Bronze therefore sits with the Black and the Black LVB 250, which is the direction an upgrade would take.

The Numbers That Matter at Setup

Ortofon specifies the nude Fine Line diamond at an 8/40 µm tip radius, dynamic lateral compliance of 22 µm/mN, tracking ability of 80 µm at 315 Hz, and frequency response of 20 Hz – 20 kHz, +2/–0 dB.

Tracking force is 1.4 to 1.7 g, recommended 1.5 g — lighter than the Red and Blue, which sit at 1.8 g. If you are moving up from one of those, reset the arm rather than leaving it.

How Do You Fit It?

The cartridge stays where it is. Grip the old stylus assembly and pull it straight off the front of the body; it unclips, and no tool is needed. Push the new one on until it seats. Overhang and offset are untouched, so tracking force is the only setting to check.

Will it fit my cartridge?

Ortofon recommends it for the 2M Bronze, the 2MR Bronze and the 2M Bronze Premounted. Other 2M bodies will accept it mechanically, but they take their own styli.

Is the tracking force the same as my old cartridge?

Not necessarily. The Bronze runs 1.4 to 1.7 g with 1.5 g recommended, which is lighter than the 1.8 g the Red and Blue ask for. Check the arm after fitting.

What does Fine Line actually change?

The 8/40 µm radius holds a long, narrow contact patch on the groove wall. That reaches modulations a rounder tip skims, and spreads wear over more of the groove surface.

How long does a stylus last?

Around 1,000 hours is the usual figure, though it turns on how clean your records are and how accurately the cartridge is set up. A worn tip damages records, so replace it on schedule rather than by ear.
